At th e start o f moto o ne, it was Ed Arnet aboard a KX250 taking the hol esh ot a nd close behind him wa s 406cc ATK-mounted McLa in , with Chris Tay lo r, U lf J ohansson a nd John Posca a ll bunched up in th e 1800 tu rn at th e end o f th e stra igh ta way. As th e riders so rted themselves o ut, Arn et a nd McLa in began to pull a way from T a ylo r wi th H onda mounted Roger J ones beginn in g 10 make h ea d wa y wit h the fr ont run ners. J ones was soo n runn in g in fourth wit h J ohansson a ttached 10 hi s rea r fende r. Mom ents later , J oh an sson slip ped b y a nd into thi rd. At th e rnidrnot o mark, Arn et ca me to a roll in g hall as his rear a xle nut had fall en off, gi ving McLain a very large lead o ver J ohan sson, wh o had now moved into seco nd o vera ll , fir st 250cc Pro with J ones and Posca not far behind. Runn ing in the second Open Pro slo t was Brian Var~us aboard a KX 500. T he p o si t ion remained intact with McLain taking th e o vera ll win and ·Johansson cap tur ing the 250cc Pro rnoto win. When th e !pte fell for moto two, McLain's timmg was spot o n and he proceeded 10 lead the pack into th e first corner. Running in second was Vargus with Arnet stuffing hi s wa y by and they entered the 180 0 turn. McLain was waiting for no one and immedi ately began to open u p some breathing room o n th e pack. Arnet was co mforta ble with seco nd overa ll, first 250cc spo t in th e moto. Running in third was a hard charg ing J ohansso n on hi s Pro-Circuit/Whi te Bro s. Honda, with Posca 's YZ250 o nly a cou p le o f bike len gths behind. Under th e white flag, T aylor a nd Var gus were di cing heavil y for fourth ove ra ll as Mcl..a in took hi s seco nd rnoto win of th e day.' J ohan sson finished a sho rt d istan ce behind Arnet, bu t wi th a -1-2 score, nailed down th e 250cc win. J on es went 2-3 for second 250cc Pro slo t a nd ro u ndi ng o u t th e third 250cc slot was Arnet, with a 5-1 day. Va rgus claimed seco nd overa ll500cc via a 2-2 set o f mot o s. In 250cc No vice ac tio n , Bill Sau ro took th e holesh ot in rnot o one, and Hond a-mounted J ack Phinn di ced with KX pilot J oe Crouch . These two riders stayed within a bike's len gth of eac h o ther for over mor e th an half o f the race wh en Phinn fail ed to show u p wit h Crouch a nd J im Carley ass u med th e number three slot as Sa u ro too k th e ch eckered fla g forthe 250cc class win. In moto two , it was almost a replay of mota o ne, with Sauro ~etting th e ho les hot a hea d of P h m n a nd Crouch . As Sa u ro pu lled aw ay from the pa ck , Jim Carley mov ed up into a three rider di ce for second place. Phinn success fu lly held off Crouch for over half th e mot a befor e su rre ndering th e number two position 10 him.
