I of the first semi followed by Jeff Beckington, who was quickly passed by Canadi an Suzuki rider Ro ss Pederson. On lap two Pederson, wh o was riding with a brok en foot , lea ped into the lead when he passed Dyck ove r th e triple-jumps. A sho rt time later Dyck crashed, moving Beckington to seco nd. Beckington q uickl y moved in o n Ped erso n a nd they battled u ntil the th ird lap wh en Beckington fell. Tha t moved Frisz to seco nd, but h is po si tio n was in jeopa rdy due to challe nges fro m J oJo Kell er until Kell er ba iled la ter o n the third lap. Things sett led down at the halfway point as Pederson held a cou p le of seco nds on Fri sz. Do ug Dubach was th e man o n the move a nd flew into th ird , th en slo wly reeled Frisz in . On th e fina l lap Frisz began to back o ff as Pederson scooted to the win , a nd Dubach quickl y closed in. Dubach tried to strike i n th e fina l turn , but Fri sz held him off for seco nd a nd the tra ns fer to th e ma in. Donn y Sch mi t go t th e ho lesh ot in th e second ~em i but Matson passed him aft er the first turn. Schmit sta yed close and cha lle nged for th e lead o ver the first two laps as th e two rid ers pulled away from th e rest o f the pack. On the th ird lap Matson and Sch m it swapped the lead severa l times , but it wasn 't u nti l lap fou r tha t Sch m it was finally able to ga in the u p per hand with a pass in th e wh o ops. Matson fell two laps later , bu t th e bailie had carried the m fa r ahead of the pa ck a nd he remou nted safe ly in seco n d , whe re h e wo u ld fini sh behind Sch m it. H o n d a -m ou nted T om Carson grabbed th e lead a t th e stan of th e La st Chan ce Qualifier , but was passed a short time later by H onda ride r Kurt McMillen. As th e two swapped the lead Dubach h ung back in third, seem ing ly just wai ti ng for th e two fro nt runners to tangl e. After two laps Dubach pi cked u p the pa ce with Mike Fish er on his ' ta il and moved in o n McMillen and Carson, form ing a four-ri der freigh t tra in . On lap fou r Fishe r found a wa y by Dubach , but Dubach fou gh t bac k and pulled a lo ngside in the follo wing wh oop sectio n. Dubach got a littl e to o mu ch air a s t h ey a p proach ed th e nex t co rner a nd cl ipped Fis her 's bike 's rear end, send ing him down a nd o ut o f th e main even t. Fishe r th en moved in on McMillen , who in turn closed the gap Carson had buill. On lap seven Fish er flew by McMillan for seco nd a nd was a few seco nds behind Car son wh en the whi te flag flew. Fish er put o n a despe rate charge o n th e fin al lap and nearl y fell , bu t h is charge ca rri ed h im close enoug h so th at when Carson go t crossed up in a rutted comer a few tu rns before th e fini sh Fish er was able to slip by and tak e the win a nd fast transfer to th e main. Ward pulled th e hol esh ot a t th e star t of th e main a nd was followed o u t of th e first tu rn by H olland, Mat iasevich , Keh oe, J ohnson, Stanton a nd Leisk. On the first la p bo th Gl over a nd Lechien were together ' a nd q uickly passed Lei sk , while J ohnso n moved aro u nd Keh oe. Ward wa s chargi ng o u t fron t an d entered the seco nd lap a few bike lengths ahead o f Holland as J ohnson began to bear down on Matiasevich . J ohnso n looked to th e inside o f th e fir st tum, bu t Matiasevich shut him off and kept him at bay for several more turns. J ohnson fin all y found a way by the Ka wa sak i pilot, th en moved in o n H o lla nd, wh o was two seconds behind Ward. . .
