Senator John C Danforth (R-Missouri) played role in helping secure federa funding by writing the Depart ment of Transportation and urgin DOT to make the funds available Danforth is the senator who intro duced the 1987 Motorcycl Safety Act and then withdre support for his own bill afte extensive discussions with th AMA. Danforth 's bill could hav banned the sale of Japanese made superbikes in the Unite States. Motorcycle safety pro grams were the only new are added to the six existing nationa priority program areas establishe in 1982. Those areas include occupant protection. alcoho countermeasures, police traffi services. emergency medical ser vices, traffic records. safety con struction and operationa improvements.
