SANFORD, NC, MAR. 4 The 1988 N orth Carolina Hare Scrambles Series got underway at Devil's Ridge and Steve McSwain picked up where he left off in '87 by winning the opening round over som e stiff competition. A new five-mile co urse had been cut with tight wood s sections co n necting the old and new motocross tr acks . McSwain fired his 500cc Barr's Competi tion Honda off th e line in th e fourth wave a nd was pressured early by Steven Arther. Arther , th e Virginia Cross Country Seri esrunner-up, kept McSwain in sightas th ey wo rked through traffic, but McSwain's do mi na nce of th e motocross sectio ns allowed him to pull away fro m th e Husky mounted rider . McSwain 's win opened the door for Farrell Sm ith to tak e th e 500cc class as Arther was forced to retire early. The 500cc class was a tight affai r that put Nicky " Beet" Baker into seco nd overa ll. Burn H amrick took th e ea rly lead a nd held it for the first hour, but Bak er pressed ha rd and s tayed w ithin s tr i kin g di st an ce. Bak er reeled in th e Honda rid er a nd mad e it stick as he brough t his CanAm in for th e win. The 125cc cl ass featured Gary Leonard co ming from behind to overtake Greg Erwin. Early leader Steve Center fell back with a sheared co un tersha ft sprocke t a nd Daniel Erwin slid into third. David Ashl ey dominated th e 200cc clas s on his Kaw asaki KDX and Chris Walton ~ot th e nod in th e Four-Stroke divisi on on a Honda.
