As th e riders sort ed them selves o u t, Turner began . to feel the presen ce o f Brundage, but . the pai r failed to not ice, just turned p ro , Lawren ce charge up on th e o u tsi de. On lap th ree, Lawren ce pow ered into the lead with Brundage now in second as Turner fell on the pace. Tri-City H onda 's Willy Musgrave , was o n th e gas hard and p u lled away fro m th e pack to mov e into the #3 posit ion with Durbin falling back to fourth. As the race p rogressed, Lawren ce opene d u p some breathing room on Brundage and Mu sgrave, whi le back in the pack pl aces were being changed with every lap. Crai g Davis was trying to mak e up for a poor start, and was pu tti ng riders behind him quickl y, and as Lawren ce took th e chec kered ahe ad of Brundage a n d Musgrave. David m oved into fourth, with Turner ro undi ng ou t th e top five riders. In mo to two , Turner o nce again too k th e point position with Brundage, Mu sgra ve and Lawrence hot on his heels. Behind th e leaders rose a large du st cloud as Colin Ryan had over a dozen riders trying to claim his position. Turner held onto th e lead th is time a nd held o ff a ll co mers as h e we n t w ire-to-wire for th e second mot o win. Brundag e stayed calm and collec ted as he held o ff th e charges of Musgrave, who ne eded to pass th e KX pilot to have a cha nce for th e overall. Brundage maintained and took the overall win wi th a set o f sec ond pl a ce fin ishes, whil e L awren ce finish ed m oto tw o in fourth to claim runner-up honor s. Turner's 5-1 motos gave him third overa ll. .Rounding ou t the top five were, Mu sgrave with his 3-3 tall y, and Davis with a 4-7 day. Pro (l25cc) action had Lawrence, Davis and Durb in swapping th e lea d position a mo ng themselves. When all was said and done a nd th e dust had settled, it was Lawren ce and Davis swa p p ing rnoto wins with Lawren ce winning th e all important rnoto two for th e overa ll win. Davi s took home second place .cash , wi th Durbin in third. In the 125cc Intermediate clas s, H onda rider Paul Cortez smoked to the tune of first overa ll with a pair o f moto w i n s. L arry L awrence pl ayed bridesmaid in both motos for second overall , while Chris Fon zo ca p tured third overa ll. Vet Expert actio n saw Greg Blackwell tak e hi s Honda to pair o f rnoto wins al ong with th e overa ll as Mark Anderson went 2-3 for seco nd overall. Lusk, Neal double Hillbilly Hills MX By Gary Crider MACON, GA, MAR. 27 The opening round of the Georgia Alabama Spring MX Seri es at Hillbilly Hills MX saw Ezra Lusk top the Senior Mini and Super Mini div isions, while fell ow T eam Green member Todd Neal romped to the 125 and 250cc B victories. Honda riders Mark Crozi er a nd Tom m y Martin sq ua red off both A d ivisions and ca me away with a cla ss win eac h. Ove r 240 ri ders were on hand for the Geo rgia Cycle Suppl y-sponsored even t. The la rge number o f l2 5cc C entries required th e running o f two qualifying heats and a fin al moto. Scotty Matth ew s easi ly won hi s qualifier. Thirteen year-o ld Brock Bullard, who had raced a full- sized machine o nly once before, won hi s qualifier battle in a close match over Russell Radford. Matthews, Bullard a nd Radford lined up for th e fin al a nd when th e gate dropped , Bullard took command o f the lead, leaving Matthews and Radford stuc k in heavy traffi c. Radford soon en te re d the DNF colu m n, while Matthews claw ed his way toward th e front. With two laps re ma ini ng, R&D's Matthews closed the ga p on Bullard a nd took th e lead to win, nettin g top honor s. Scotti PJ-IIEP-back ed Bullard held on to cla im runner-up gold" and said, " I thought I coul d hold Matthews off to th e finish but a lapped rider fell in front o f me a nd I lost my momentum. " Kevin Cozadd posted 3-4 to net thi rd o vera ll. Radford returned in 250cc C action a n d see me d to hav e the o ver a ll victory wrapped 'up , as he led the final mot o going into th e final lap. Steve Sau nders, however, mounted a last lap charge from third position to take the win, netting a perfect score over Radford's pair of seconds. Allen Harrison, riding his first race in more than a year, turned in a perfect score in Open B action. Dan Lipscomb and Steve Vollo had th eir turns a t the lead position but even tu ally had to settle for second and . third overall. Wallace Finch er thund er ed to a pa ir of fourth place finish es aboard h is XR600 Honda to claim fifth overall behind John Trissel' s fourth overall , 5-3 tally. Danny Maxim a /Ej'-back ed Haynes proved his claim to Junior Mini honors with a spectacular seco nd moto pe rformance. Haynes to o k th e lead away from Chris McN eil on the first lap only to crash back to seventh position. Haynes stead ily moved ba ck toward the front despite stiff com pe tition and fin ally closed the gap on fr ont-runner ' McN eil. H aynes took th e win for a perfect score over McN eil. " I' ve been workin g on my - jumps ," said H aynes, " tha t's where I was making up time." H aynes squared o ff wi th Patrick H izel in 65cc actio n and their close match was decided on the last lap of the second moto when Hizel do ve under H aynes to take th e lead . Martin wins t wo at Oak Hill RR opener Gy George Pec kha m HENDERSON , TX, MAR. 20 Michael Martin ca me out on hi s new Yam aha FZR400 to win both the D Production a nd Formula T wo races at Oak Hill Raceway's first road race of 1988. "Mart in and Rusty All en, riding a Kaw asaki EX500 resumed their ontrack rivalry from last season. Martin rode a n RZ350 here last year and co m mented that he could probably get around the tight tra ck quicker on his RZ , than on his new FZR. Martin a nd Allen had a good race from th e start of D Production un til Martin bu ilt up a slig h t ad va n tage which he held until the end. In the Formula Two event, Allen go t a good start as did Yamahamounted Dou g Carmichael , but Martin came arou nd th em both to win. Carmichael' s two -stroke came across the fin ish line in second pl ace with Allen Iinisfiing third. J eff Harder too k th e win in B Production on his Burk's Perform an ce C ycl e-sponsored Suzuki GSXR750. Finishing second was David Clyde on a 500 Hurricane, a hea d of a host of 750s in cluding se ve ra l 1988 Suzuki GSXR 750 Slings ho ts.' _ Clyde put in a full day of practice on Saturday to prepare for Sunda y's Central Road Ra cing ' Club sp rint races. His practi ce showed as Clyde rode several races a nd finished well
