Stanley smokes KentuckyMX By James Allen EASTERN, KY, MAR. 20 Yamah~ rider Brian Stanley jumped to a quick lead wh en he cleared the t~il?l es and rode £l aw lessly for I-I finishes and the overall win in the 250cc Expert class at East ern Kentucky MX. Chuckie Drake took the win over Barry Gardener by a bike in the 1213 year-old 80cc class. Gardener . pushed it in the two motos but wasn't able to put Drake away. Honda of Prestonsburg's Barron Allen took both motos in the 125cc B class. Allen went into the first turn with five bikes side-by- side , took over on the tabl etop, and had easy sailing, Kawasaki rider Rod Foley had hIS hands full with KTM-mounted Dennis Blevins. The 250cc Junior/Expert cla ss started with Expert Mike McDon· ~ell , on a Kawasak i, tak in g th e lead In the heat and holding h is position all the way. In th e main , he again grabbed th e holeshot with Junior Suzuki rider William Arbogast holding th e second spot. Arbogast was pushed hard all th e way by Expert Danny Ca hoon, on a Yam aha Iol low~d by Junior T im Selby' and JUni or Paul Polhemus in fourth and fifth o n Kawasaki s. . Th.e 500cc Open Expert class cam e , In with a whopping 22 rid ers with th ree heat s and two semis before th eir main event . Two rid ers from eac h heat went dir ectl y to th e main event to form the front row and three rid ers from each semi fo rmed the back row of th e 12 man race. Daniel McDonnell rode hi s Kawa saki into first off th e lin e and held his po sition at th e checkered £lag. Everyon e else kept changi ng pl aces back an d forth. John T av is and Alan McG eh ee battled hard for second while Frank Nye drove hard on both of th em fin all y managing to overtake McG e- hee at the white flag for third. Kawasaki-mounted Bobby McDowell did a great job of working his way up from a back row start to slide into th e fifth position which he held for eight laps. During th e eigh th lap, Dave Bostrom overtook McDow ell on th e " S" curve in the infield to grab fifth. The yet Expe rts pu t o n a great show .....ith two heats. Yam aha nder J ohn T avis, Jr. came off the lin e for the first heat to gra b th e insi de lin e with Frank Nye right behind him. The seco nd h eat ca ug h t Alan McGeh ee driving his KTM into the hole, while Dave Bostrom rode his ATK hard trying to catch him. The main event was a different story th ough. Bostrom was off the line lik e a sho t, catc h ing the holeshot and slo.wly . ext ending his lead by about SIX bike lengths by the time the check ered £lag was thrown. Yamaha rider Allen Yarrow was second with Nye pushing hard on hIS back wheel. Fischer was wheel-tow~eel with A.J. Spicer and Paul MIChels throughout most of the race. Michels hit his ankle on a rock and went out of th e race with a possible fracture while Spicer, riding his ATK for the first time, fell victim to a lack of octane in th e closing minutes. An other front-runner was Honda: mounted Mark Mehuron but he lost his chec k tag and was disq ualified yet wen t o n to race with Fischer throughout th e two-hour race: In th e 200cc clas s it was William West taking th e honors. West led his class th e en tire race but had Dave Al sip a n d Mike Ni ch ols seco n d behind him. Both Alsip and Nichols rod e hard a nd fast but neith er could o verco me West's pace. The top finish ers went 60 miles ov.er th e two-hour spa n . The four mile co urse was fast with a few nightmares that took th eir toll on on ly a few rid ers. Results ~ 25 : 1.
