The subcommittee re c e ntl y completed it s study of the bill and sent the measure to the full Energy & Natural Resources Committee. The committee will "mark up " the bill (negotiate changes in the legislation) then vote on it. S7 probably w ill not be cons idered until after the Senate's April recess. The bill could be heard sometime in May, but perhaps not. "We're real busy with other issues right now, but S7 is on the business meeting agenda. " said a committee spokesperson. A resolution opposing S7 was passed March 20 by th e California Republican Assembly during th e o rga nization 's an nual convention, held in Redwood City: In the resolution, California Rep ublica ns said th ey, "recognize the need to protect th e desert environment. " but added that they oppose, "restrictive and unfair denial of free access to the desert area." The California Senate Appropria tions Committee has not set a date for hearings on AB36. a mandatory helmet bill which cleared the Senate Transportation Committee March 15. The bill could be scheduled for hearings soon or could bypass the committee altogether. In an attempt to appease OH V users, Agonia officially we nt o n record agai nst 57, the Cal ifornia Desert Protection Act, wh ich wo u ld clos e large portions of th e southern Cal iforn ia Desert to o ff-road ridin g. Accor di ng to CO RVA, thei r campaign has had an i mpact. CO RVA officials say 17 o u t of 40 state senators have indicated th ey will not support Agonia in a floor vote.
