It makes me feel like I deserve to have th at number one pl ate on m y bike wh en you win like that. " My sta rt wasn 't bad and I came up a nd passed J eff and was a hea d of him for a whil e a nd the n he passed me back: T he n he pulled a little and I caugh t back up, so it was good for me to run so me wha t the speed J eff was ," sai d G lo ver. , " I d idn' t move as fast 'as I sho uld have," said Ward . Holland qui ckly ope ned a small lead o n Kehoe, who in turn wa s pulling a way from Matiasevich. At the end of two laps this group o f six had moved a way from the rest of th e pack. . Kehoe closed in on H olland by lap four and rem ained very close for th e next several laps. Sch mi t went .to th ird o n . the fourth lap whil e T ich en or began to put pressure o n Craig. Keh oe was looking for a way arou nd H olland, a nd a p pa ren tly in h is searc h dr ift ed too far out near the co u rse ribbon, wh ic h was bein g blown 'onto the track in some sections; h e. ca me aro u nd tra i li ng ribbo n from hi s ha ndlebars. At about th e same time hi s rea r brak e wen t away , and he bega n to dro p back. "On the thi rd la p I lost a ll the oil fro m my rear b~ake, so I had t~ b:,!ck it off and basically try to fin ish. There was no way I was going to p us h it with George with no rear brakes, so I just held o n for second." At th e halfway point Keh oe was further off th e pa ce as the ribbon found it's way into his rear sprocket , . and he had no rear brake. Tichenor had passed Craig a couple of laps before and got by Matiasevich at midmoto. Craig passed Matiasevich a lap later, setting the top six for the rest of the race . Further back a tight battle ' was being fought for seventh as Kawasaki Team Green rider Mike Kiedrowski tried to hold ·o ff th e charges of Yamaha-mounted Mike LaRocco. The two battled to the ' end with Kiedrowski taking th e position. Ah ead, in o rd er o f finish, was Holland, Kehoe, Schmit, Tichenor, Craig and Matiasevich. Suzuki'.s Kei th Turpin and Kawasak imounted Larr y Brooks rounded out the top 10. " At th e first part of th e race it was kind o f muddy," H olland said, " so I was being careful. When the track dr ied out a little bit I began picking the pace up a li tt le bit and got a little cus hi on." H olland shot into th e lead again to start moto two , trailed by Suzuki's T y Davis, Tichen or, Matiasevich, Schmi t and Kehoe. On the first lap Kehoe moved up to fourill, then a lap later moved into third behind Tich en or as Davis began to drop back. The top three, consis ting of Holland Tichenor and Kehoe, were very close and moved awa y from Davis: . Tich enor began to cha llenge H oi land for the lead on lap three then took it on the n ext circ u i t. As Tich en or moved aw ay sli ghtly Hoilan d ca me under fire from Keh oe and was passed af ter two laps of fig h ting. Af ter : pass i ng . H olland , Keh o e quickly moved in on hi s teammat e, dogged him and took th e lead . But a lap later ' Keh oe fell, and both T ichenor and H olland were by. Back in fou rt h Sch mi t had battl ed by Da vis, lea vin g him to deal with Ma tiasevich . Keh oe d idn't stay in th ird for more th an a lap, and at th e halfway po int was back in front o f T ich en or and H olland. A large gap separa ted th e to p th ree from Schmit, who made .a mistake and was passed by DaVIS the n quickly retook fou rth postion . Mat iasevich kept clo se tab s from J sixth, well ahead of Kiedrowski and Craig. Once o u t in front Kehoe began to pull a wa y, but Holland passed Tichenor and didn't let . Kehoe get too far ah ead. In a few laps Holland was right ba ck in Kehoe's tra cks as Tichenor began to fade. . " I had m y knee braces a little too tight and my lower leg s pumped up," said Tich enor. "I tried to sta y with them." Holland was putting the pressure on Kehoe, and although Kehoe began to look sloppy, he didn't crack. On the closing laps Kehoe settled down and moved away, eventually finishing about three seconds ahead of Holland. Tichenor remained in third, while Schmit cruised alone in fourth. Matiasevich battled with' Davis for the last half of the race and held off several passing attempts by Davis on the last lap to finish fifth. Kiedrowski was seventh followed by Brooks, Craig and Suzuki's Todd DeHoop. "At the first r.art of the race I was riding really stiff and had some bad . lines," said Holland. "Right about three quarters of the.way through the race I caugh t him, but thenhe picked it up righ t a t the end and I Just co uld n ' t ca tch h im. I was ri ght on · him, but he seemed like he was kind of riding over his head; he was out of shape a lot. There at th e end I thought he was going to crash, but he sta yed up and won." . ':1 didn ' t get the start I wante~, " said Kehoe, "but I just kept pushing it and caugh t up. I passed th em once and then went into a pace mode. I had a lack of conce ntra tio n for a second and fell down. I ~ot up and -had to repass them again and got ba ck into that pace mode. I slowed the pace a little bit and he got on the gas. I had to p ick up the pace the last couple of laps and pulled back away fro m him:" • Results 250 NATIONAL : 1. Rick Johnson (Hon) 1-1 ; 2. Jeff Werd (Kaw) 2-2; 3.
