Davis, Gonzalez top Blythe MX By Ken Faught 30 BL YTHEN, CA, MAR. 19-20 Team Suzuki's Ty Davis and Team Gree n's Mercedes Gonzalez were top money wi nners in the inaugural Dobbs TV and Aud io Western Sta te Ch ampionsh ips a t Blyth e Raceway. Davis topped bo th th e 125 and 250cc Pro classes by winning every rn oto he en tered, as did Gonzalez in th e Wom en 's Pro class. At the stan of the first 125cc Pro moto Phil Lawrence, riding in his first Pro race , holeshot Mike Pa scarella, Paul Clach , Robert Naughton and Davis. On th e first lap Pascarella work ed his wa y around Lawrence and began to gain some breathing room. Davis rapidly cu t through th e pack and by th e second lap was in third, looking for a way around Lawrence, wh o soon fell in th e whoops. While Davis was adva nci ng Mike Craig had moved in to fifth after a Ifl th-p lace start, Back up fro m Davis began to cut down Pascarella 's lead and wi thi n a few la ps the two riders began to bang bars. Pascarella swapped sideways off a j ump a nd th at was all the Suzuki pi lot needed to take over th e lead . Pascarella repassed, but once again Davis took the lead and slow ly opened up a comfortab le lead. Davis took the win and $310, his share of th e per rnot o pay bac k, follo wed by Pascarella , Craig, Lawren ce, and Vlach. At th e sta n of the second mo to Lawren ce again hol esh ot J im m y Gaddis, Davis, Scott Bro wn, and Craig. Gaddis bobbled in th e second corner an d almos t too k o ut Craig as Brown slip ped into third. On th e thi rd lap Bro wn cras hed hard a nd dro pped way back, wh ich a llo wed J eff Mabery to br eak into the lOPfive. As th e race con tinued Davis passed La wrence and quickl y pulled away. Lawren ce soo n fell back to fifth after bein g passed by Craig, Gaddis, and Mabery. Davis took th e win and a no ther $310, foll owed by Crai g, Ga ddis, Mab er y and L a wr en ce Davis claimed the overall win ahead of Craig , La wrence, Gaddis, and Mabery. At the stan of th e first Women 's Pro race J eanni e Pruitt got th e holesh ot over Vicky Jackson, T ara Harrison, Sh eryl Federo w and Mercedes Gonzalez. Pru itt q ui ckl y dropped back to fourth a nd Federo w soo n dropped o ut of th e top five when she lost th e from end in a deep rut and took out Tami Rice. A few laps into the race Gonzalez worked her way past H arrison and by the halfway point had caught Ja ckson and began to look for a way into th e lead. Gonzalez passed Jackson and then opened up a comfortable lead. Wh en the checkered flag came out . it was the current Wom en 's Na tio nal Champion Gonzal ez taking the win followed by J ack son, H arri son , Pruitt, and Lisa Pet erson . Second moto action saw J ackson bla st into th e lead ahead of Pruitt, Ri ce, Peterson and Gonzal ez. Gonzalez spen t very Iittle time wor ki ng her way to th e front and by th e co mpletion of th e first lap had th e lead . While Gonzalez was buildi ng up a co mfor table lead , H arr ison ha d wo rked her way into third with Rice close behi nd. With o n ly a few laps remaini ng Rice fell back to seventh, moving Peterson into fourth ahead of Prui tt. As th e race con tin ued the riders started to spread th emselves o ut a nd Gonzalez cruised \0 her second mo to win "followed y J ackson, H arri son , Pet er son , an d P r u it t. Gon zalez topped th e field of 28 rid ers a nd ga thered a nice chunk of the SIOO purse. J ackson was second O overall foll owed by H arriso n , Peterson and Pru itt, At the sta n of th e first Mini Fo ur Stro ke moto Sean Marlan do holeshot Rod ger Dogrell , Ron Wood, J eff Nea l a n d T odd Carroll. On th e second lap Carroll fell while negotiating a rutted turn and too k o u t Kirk Pu ern er. As th e race con tin ued Wood bu ill up more tha n 20 seconds over the field of mo dified XR s and cruised to an easy win foll owed by Ma r land o , Nea l , Carro ll a nd Dog rell. Second rnoto ac tio n saw Wood hol eshot Dogrell , Marl ando, Neal and Carroll. Again Wood opened up a sizable lead·during th e initial few laps while Dogrell soo n started to reel in Marlando and set th e stage for an awesome battle. For severa l laps th e two riders banged bar s in every berm until Marl ando was abl e to stuff Dogrell into a berm. The fin al few laps saw a duel to th e death with both riders willing to do almost anything to take seco nd. As th e riders approached th e checkered flag th ey banged bars several more tim es and nearl y took each o ther out. However, at th e checkers Marlando managed to hold off Dogrell for th e runnerup position. -Wood took the overall followed by Marlando, Ne a l, Dogrell , and Carroll. Results MINI 4·STRK : 1. Tresser takes Moilterey ST win By Mike Vancil MONTEREY, CA, MAR . 12 Andy Tresser turned in a spectacular performance to take th e 500cc Expert win over Gary Ferravanti, J immy H iguer a a n d Kevin Crowley at Monterey County Fairgrounds. T he heat race was an indication of how th e fin al m ight go wh en T resser put hi s Ro tax in to an immediate lead, made no mistakes and wo n goi ng awa y on his ABC Body Shop-sponsored machine. The final started the same as the hea t bu t developed into a real baule for second p lace between Ferravanti, on a Bro wn 's Yamaha and C & G T ru ck in g- sp o n sored Rota x , a n d hard rid ing H iguera o n a Va ls' Plumbing and J & J Truckingsponsored H onda. Eventuall y H iguera fell wh ile battl in g wi th Ferravant i, They had swa pped second pl ace severa l tim es up until Higuera's spi ll. There was no slowing T resser and he too k th e win . In th e 500cc Junior .class Gar y Vin celet jumped th e sta rt in both the heat and final and had to start both rac es from th e penalty line. His progress forw ard in the heat ended with a fourth place, but in the 13lap final he tried harder and was able to work by lead er John Pack coming o ut of turn two late in th e race. Pack had ' go ne just a little wide exi ting th e.turn and Vincelet was alongside and then past in a sp lit second. Third in th e fin al wen t to Perry Lang, who
