Sandell on track at Lakewood MX By larry Johnson 40 LAKEWOOD, CO, FEB. 28 Kip Sandell started off the 1988 Sports Riders Association of Colorado motocross season the right way as the 1986 250cc Pro state champ took his Vickery Motorsports sponsored Yamaha YZ250 to a perfect II tally in the 250cc Pro class today at Lakewood. Tim Buchli led Sandell out of the gate in moto one, but Sandell grabbed the lead in the muddy second turn and stretched out a huge lead by the ch eckers. This time a foursome stayed close to the finish, with J im Mitchell taking second ahead of Brown and Newell. Buchli was in the fray , but crashed hard on the steep downhill during lap five and finished fifth . Buchli, who owns 125cc Pro state titles for 1985 and '86, started his attempt to recapture the crown on the right foot. H e won the overall but Scott Fulcher, up from th e 80cc class, took the lead away from Buchli briefly during lap two , then bailed a few turns later. Jared Ramsour held second from then on ah ead of Gil Murray, Fulcher and Sandell. Sandell led mota two from early in the first lap to th e finish, with Buchli in tow. Buchli slowl y reeled Sandell -in, finishing a bike length back. Keith Campbell trailed in third ahead of Ramsour. Andy Atkins had all he could handle from Jeremy Middaugh in the 80cc Express cla ss. Middaugh hounded Atkins all of moto one, then used a lapped rider to his advantage with two circu its left and took the lead and win. He motored by Atkins again in mota two , but crashed out of contention shortly after, giving Atkins another of many first place trophies.
