In the Pro-Am class , Jason Fletcher repeated his heat win , leading all th e way in th e main over Clint Vahsholtz and Brian Tillson. Rusty Rogers blasted into the lead of th e 250cc Pro m ain and pulled aw ay with a commanding lead only to have his screaming two-stro ke give up going into turn one at th e halfway . mark. Kris Kiser took over with Roger Durkee a short di stance back. Kiser wa s in commmand for the last half of th e race , and the real battle was over third pl ace between Ted Boody and Marty Volmert. Volmert slipped by on lap seven and held on to take third. Crai g Estelle go t the holeshot in th e Unlimited 750cc Twin class with T ed Boody givin g chase. Boody used his experien ce to gain the lead just after the halfway p oint. Estelle stayed close but wa s nev er ab le to mount a strong cha llen ge. Dave Miller wa s a safe third. The biggest class of the night was the 600 cc Pro divi sion with 32 entries. Five qualifying heat wins wen t to Willie McCoy, Kiser, Boody, Alan Powers an d Bryan Villella. Villella's heat was the fastest, giv ing h im pole position for th e first quarter fin al , where he passed Boody on lap two and steadily pulled aw ay. Rusty Rogers held third until lap four when h is engine expired movin g Bill Jackson in to third. The first two moved di rectly into th e fin al. The seco nd quarter-final saw Will Davis sli p by Robert Lewis on lap two with Steve Morehead in third. Moreh ead dropped ba ck, allowing Cr aig Estelle to tak e third, th en on th e la st lap Estelle got by Lewis. Keith J acobsen grabbed the lead in th e th ird quarter-final on ly to be p assed by Lewis on lap two, who was ' in turn passed by Randy T exter; th e order was set with T exter a nd Lewis moving into the final. . Kiser took the point in th e last quarter -fin al with Scott Stump in second, but Da vid Miller grabbed seco n d on lap three. The sem is were tak en by Keith J acob sen and Tim Lorge. The 600cc Expert fin al was dom in ated by Villella, who took com mand early over MccCoy, Miller an d · Bood y. Will Davis slipped into thi rd but was q uickly set back by Boody. At th e halfway p oint, Boody dr opped McCoy to third. Vill ella wa s long gone and Boody controlled seco nd for th e re mai nder of the race. McCoy h ad a lock o n third as. Poovey dominates Devil's Bowl HM By Dave Hoenig MESQUITE, TX, FEB. 21 Summer-like weather greet ed 60 Professional and Amateur cl a ss racers to Bob Bagwell's Pro-Am race a t Devil's Bowl Speedway, where T erry Poovey dominated the slick half mile oval with convincing wins in hi s heat, the dash-for-cash and th e . Junior/Expert final. The 60cc class ki cked off the Amateur portion of the program with Sco tt Stevens besting Billy Kennedys'They repeated those results in th e80cc class. Alan Eadie jumped to the front of the 250cc Amateur final and held on to win over Mike Weeden. Rocky Fi vecoat took third, holding off I25cc winner Bryan Williams. The Open Am ateu r 'race ' was a dandy with J ohn Moffatt trying to pass leader Mike Eadie in every turn. Moffatt finally took th e lead in turn three on lap six on ly to fall in turn four, br in ging out th e red flag. The race was called co m p le te with Ead ie . the winner over G reg Teague who had worked h is way to th e front after a ro w two start . The Vintage cl ass belonged to Amateur Johnny Isaacs, who wo n easily ahead o f David Best. A ba ttl e for th ird betw een G erald Jessu p an d J immy Stovall went to J essup. On the professional side of th e program, Poovey starte d things off by beatin g Charlie Orr an d Alan Powers in th e $200 dash-for-cash . In th e Pro-Am fin al , Mike H al e co n ti n ued his winning wa ys bu t Brad Blanken sh ip appl ied enough pressure to keep Hal e on hi s toes. Shane ' Jolly worked h is way up to third , fini shin g o ve r Chuck Seitsinger , The' Junior/Expert fi nal was a ll Poovey 's. He led Orr, Powers, Sco tt Adams, Marc Gifford and Willie Morgan M alocco and Kenny Parry tea med up to w in Gran Carrera. McCoy off the start. GiHord proved to be the man to watch, while Poovey stretched his lead. Lap nine saw GiHord blast by Powers into third and the final order was set with Poovey far ahead of Orr, Gifford, Powers, McCoy, Adams, Kelly Larkin and Kris KIser. Results 60: 1. Scon Stevens; 2. MaloccojParry top Gran Carrera OH-Road By Mike Sandoval SAN FELIPE, B.C. , MEXICO, FEB . 19-21 The first round of the three-race Triple Crown of Baj a Off-Road Series got underway with the 250mile Gran Carrera Internacional, and taking top honors wa s the team of Morgan Malocco and Kenny Parry with an average speed of 50 mph in 4;31:12. Coming ou t of a forced two-year retirement b ecause o f injuries , Mal occo teamed up with Parry on a Whi te Bros .lPJI Oils/JT Racingspons ored Kaw asaki KX500 to take . th e overall victory as well as th e Pro Open class win. Cha sin g leader s Mal o cco a n d Parry wa s last O ctober's G ran Carrera De Campeones overa ll winner Tim Morton. This time, Morton wa s teamed up with Baja veteran Scot H arden riding a Honda CR250. H ard en su ffered a flat tire during hi s first lap an d there was no spare a t th e next p it. Unda unted, H arden rode th e kn obbies oH the flat front tire until reaching the start area whe re th eir main pit was located. A quick rider cha n ge an d Morton was off giving chase to th e Mal occo/ P arry Kaw asaki. , Morton wa s ab le to ga in on the lead ers for th e better part of th e seco nd la p. and wh en he turned th e bike back over to Harden , the y h ad wh ittl ed down a 10-minute margin to j us t a co uple of minutes. Hard en said, "Tim (Mo rt on) did a heck of a job, gaining most o f th e time we h ad lost with the flat, a nd wh en I got on th e bike I cou ld see Mal occo 's dust. In fact, I think I got within 40 seconds of the lead bike, . an d th en I unloaded a t abo u t 65 mph and th at was it. From then o n it was . j us t holding on to seco nd place." Morton and Harden wound up th e three-lap event in a time of 4:43.30, approximately seven minutes behind th e leaders. Rounding out third place in the Pro Open class was the team of Rick Slater a nd Earl Roberts. They finished 17 minutes behind the leaders after 248 miles of racing. It was lucky they fini shed at all. The team's Yamaha YZ250 was running poorly as the y crossed th e checkered flag. R ober ts sa id , " I wish the bike would'v e been ru n n ing bet ter , I think we could've reall y given them a good fight. Next tim e!" Prera ce favorite Paul O stb o , who won la st yea r' s Gran Carrera Internacional a n d attempted to ride the event sol o , had his effort co me to an abru p t halt with mech anical problems before reaching even th e first o f four checkpoin ts along th e cou rse. There was plenty of Sportman activity. Leading the way was the three-man team of Mari a Arjon, a nd Oscar a n d Vitto Hale from Ensenada, B.C .. They beat a field of 20 teams, com p leting the three laps in a time of 5:23;57 aboard a Honda CR250, sp o ns o red b y Agencia Arjona Racing, Mama Espinoza and Papas & Beer. They were three minutes ahead o f the secon d place team of Chris L ang a n d Don Rotundo on a Honda XR600. Lang a n d Rotundo opened up a . seem in gly untouchable lead. Fortyone miles into th e ra ce, th ey had built up a five-minute lead on the second pl ace team. But after completing the first lap, th e team of Arjon/Hale/ Hale began in ching their way closer to the leaders. By th e time they reached th e third ch eck on the second lap, they had passed the leaders and were well on their way to the class win. Lang and Rotundo remained close to the leaders and n ever more that a couple of minutes back. . 'Third in class went to Todd Steele, who had a t one point the class lead but dropped ba ck a couple of minutes. Fourth went to Gustavo Cardena and Vega Carballo on a Honda CR250. H oward co u ldn' t ge t his bike to start and rode th e last lap o n a rear flat. Fi slher slip ped on a steep off-ca mber and went over a b ig hill , but recovered to tak e th e win.
