Anne Adair DAYTONA BEACH, FL , FEB. 29 Mike Kiedrowski, Jay Mann and Keith Johnson earned Expert victories in the final round of the Dunlop/Wiseco/Bell Ray/ Scott USA-sponsored Triple Crown of Motocross at Daytona Internationa1 Raceway. WoridSports' Bill West explained, " Daytona's ins urance now requires a l6-year-old minimum age. This ru lin g eliminates Mini and Youth classes and affects all the divisions excep t the Seniors." Fifteen -year-old Damon Bradsh aw, wh o would ha ve been a n Expert class cont ender, said, " I' ve always looked forward to raci ng here . but I guess I will have to wait until I turn pro to race here. " Bradshaw turned over his bike and riding gear to his mechanic, Jon Laphan , who scored third at 25-Plus raci ng. The good news a,t Daytona was the success of .the Vintage moto\Toss class. Forty pre-1975 rna ch ines jammed the star t ga te wit h nostalgia. Ma icos, CZs, R ickmans, Husk y, Bultacos, Honda Elsinores, Triumphs and even a Norton, a Matchless, and an Indian single made the starting lineup. Class winner Barry H iggins said, " I wish Dick Mann could have been here to see his dream . co me tru e. " Mann, who crea ted interest in the class three years ago, had to withdraw h is entry to be with his ill brother . H igg ins ad ded, "Modem motocross eq uip ment has gotten too expe nsi ve, but a gu y can afford an old bik e. You hav e to put a lot of time on thes e old jobs, but the effort is fun." Vintage rider Gene Lowell pointed at hi s 1973 l25cc Husky and explained. " Ernie Millan Barry Higgins captured the Vintage motocross class on his KTM . Barry poses with his wife Patti. Mann wra pped up both 125 and 250cc series A titles and Brad Bol ton topped the 500cc series. Mann sai d, " I asked Doc (Dennis) Medsker to help me today and he worked on m y ankle and wrist. I felt less stress on the track and felt good in every heat. " In the l2 5cc A qual ifier T eam Green / Pro C ircu i t/ An swer/ Scott USA-spo nsored Kiedrowski moved from a fou rt h p lace start to lead every lap. The G olden Stat e National winner is also current ly second in West Coast l 25cc Supercross standings. Kiedow ski said, " The ju mps ar e not hard on th is track, but there is m o re sa n d than in m ost supercrosses." In th e - main event Kiedrowski , Chr is Coleman, J ohn Sier and Jay Mann jammed into th e first set of whoops togeth er, Kiedrowski taking the lead. Coleman's Cycle Sport/ JPJ-l Kaw asaki held second for two laps and th en Mann moved up to try Kiedrow ski to no avail, Mann said, " I don 't get many cha nces to race supercr os s sty le o bs ta cles. (T rack designer) Gary Bailey's whoops are tougher than natural ones." In the 250cc A opening rnoto, Keith Johnson led Bill Wallin , Chuck Bell and Rodney Phillips until Mann picked his way through for the win on lap four. Mann 's VPE Boyesen /Sin i salo/Scott USAsup port Kawasaki ripped across the grassy start and opened a quick lead ahea d of Jeff Beck.ington, Rodney Phillips and Jason Langsford. Mann roos ted away for the win and Beckington wrapped the runner-up position in lap two. Mann said, " I' m really happy to win at Daytona. A good start helped me ou t a lot." T eam Green Kawasaki/Boyesen / Gear-sponsored Keith Johnson led both 500cc A cont ests. In the main, Earl May and Brad Bolton ga ve it a sho t, but Johnson was too strong. J ohnson said, " Ivan Boyesen did a great job on this engine. The bike had pl en ty of low end to go with the top. " Bolton said, after receiving the series trophy and a tire from Dunlop's Lee McCollum, " I wanted to win here, but my foot slipped off my Honda's foot peg on a jump and it jammed between the frame and ground." Georgia rider Todd Neal earned the best record in the series with 10- of-12 mo to wins in 125 and 250cc B competition. Kawasaki/Barr/Bellbacked Mike Brown earned the l25cc win at Daytona, but Neal 's Team G reen/O 'Neal/Dunlop Kawasaki passed Monty Klein o n th e first lap to keep his 250cc record perfect. Neal said, "This was fun today, but wh en I raced in Bermuda last year, th ose gu ys showed us a reall y good tim e." The Bermuda contingent earned th eir eq uiv alent of an Olympic gold med al with U moja Sp encer 's win in th e l25cc C class. The Bermuda pit went berserk wh en Spencer 's Kawasaki took the lead and held it 'til the chec kered. Melvin J oel backed it up with a second in th e 250cc C, but Canadian Sandro Ghezzi aced the 250cc Triple Crown ·Cham pionship .
