During that time I ha ve not iced that mo st of our club memb ers root you (Dan Ashcraft) on and were glad to hear th at you go t th e number one pl ate for the year. But during that tim e we have also heard nothing good from you abo u t o ur races. You cry abo u t, " it's too fast; it's too slow ; you don 't kn ow how to mark a cou rse; it 's a shame that a club can put on a race like thi s." These were quotes from you LO both Cycl e N ews and the members of our club. Please take this as an invite to put up or shut up. Also take th is as a n invitati on from o ur club to work showing us the correc t way to put on a race. We cou ld start with th e Moose Run in 1989. We feel that since yo u can talk down a race so good that yo u mu st be ab le to put o ne o n better. Person al req ui rem ents for puttin g o n a race are as foll o ws: 700 o ut of pocket for go ing o ut worki ng o n the co urse, LO co ver ga s, food, tires, etc, Five weekends wo rking on th e cours e, also missin g all the races si nc e th e fi rst o f th e yea r, n ot cou nti ng wear and tear o n the bike. If you feel you ca n poss ibly handle thi s, pl ease let us kno w A AP so we can make arrangem en ts for Y9 U to pos sibl y becom e our loop ca p tain for our race in 1989. If not , and you have nothing good to say, th en just don't say a nyth ing or don 't ra ce our race. MIKE HAINES Four Aces M.e. Simi Valley , CA T he abov e letter from the Four Aces M.C. was written to Dan Ashcraft, who later expressed h is own po int of v iew in th e lett er printed below . . . Editor. Ashcraft responds I am sorry if I offended any club memb ers with my thoughts of your National Hare & Hound race course. I do not feel th at th e letter I received was very fai r to me. I never cried about your race co urse being too slow, or that you do not know how to mark a co urse. I have never cried abo u t a course being too slo w. If you would read th e Cycle N ews ar ticle again, vou wo uld realize o the r riders m ad e ' rem arks a bo u t yo ur co urse also. You mu st tak e into co nsi dera tion wh en layin g o ut a co urse - Nation al event o r local how fast th e lead ers are going so you can m ark for dan ger and turn s accordingly: I do not apprecia te your invite to put up or shut up. As you kn ow I am out there LO get number one and to have fun . To put up I would not be allowed to race, and as far as shutting up, I feel it is my right of freedom of speech LO say what I think when som eone asks me. It' s a -shame it costs yo u $700 o u t of your own pocket to layout a course, but my sponsors are spending a lot of money o n me representing them . It 's hard for me LO represent th em the best I Can wh en you have to go wide open across a valley instead of (riding in ) technical lower- speed sectio ns th at wo uld give a good rider a chance if he or she got a .bad start. My feelings on th e National Hare & H ound Series ar e that they should be LOugh, tight and with very little wide open sectio ns. This is because th e best rid ers from a ll over th e co untry ar e racing. If you do not get a good stan on a fast co urse you are not goi ng to win . If you do not get a good stan o n a tight course you can at least pass. DAN ASHCRAFT Alta Lorna, CA Endurance race error Ju st a note to thank yo u for attem p ting to correc t mi sinformation regarding riders Cam Roos and myself finishing in first place on the Roswell Honda Racing CBR600 a t _ th e AMAlCCS Firebird 500 Endura nce Race o n February 13 an d err o ne o us ly being cred ited w ith second pla ce GTU. O bvio usl y, we were ex tremel y disappo inte d (and an gry for a wh ile) at not being credited pro perl y wit h first place , but th e AMA/CCS is correc t in their sta tement that Roswell H onda Ra cing di d not file a forma l protest. Based o n rules that apply equa lly to everyone, th e resul ts stand fairly as they are. Roger Edm ondson of AMAlCCS was very helpful wh en we inf ormally asked him to check th e results. In fact, th ey checked them two tim es a nd did not find th e erro r. We have learn ed a hard- earned lesson and in th e future will work as hard off the track to protect first p lace as we do on .the track: MIKE SMITH Roswell H onda Racing Roswell , GA Up and at 'em, Tim Tim Cauby was hun real bad at the San Diego Arenacross and is feeling pretty bad. H e needs some cheering ' up and I think cards and letters from hi s friends would do that. Send them to Tim Cauby, 156 Cente r St., Covin a; CA 9 1722. Gas it, Tim! SAM BURNS Yamaha of Covina Covina, CA Hold it right there! I know that I spea k for Elsie Niday, her famil y and friends - as well as myself - wh en I extend our sincere thanks (LO Cycle N ews ) for publishing my article on Cal Niday in th e March 9 issu e. I was pleased to learn that, prior to publication, this article was read by my brother to all of those w ho attended Cal' s memorial services. In th e editor's footnote th ere was an error that I would li ke LO see corrected for th e recor ds. I was not th e o rigin a l owner/pub lisher of Mot orcyclist. The magazine had been in existence for 40 years when I came on board as editor in 1953, working for th e Western Journal Com pany, who o wned it for mo st of that time. My wife, Shirlee, bought the publication from them in 1965. Saturday, February 27, 1988, will be a da y long remembered by my wife and myself. We lost a friend and a good h earted co m pe t i to r wh en Randy Glenn , 1188, was killed on th e high banks of Daytona. I rem ember Randy as a good natured man who a lways had tim e to stop and co mpare race notes. H e was driven more by the love of the sport than th e need to win, and because of th at we had fun di cing it o ut on th e tra ck together. It 's a sham e that an over-zea lo us rider, inan attempt to cut his practice tim e could cause such a tragedy. I pray that we all migh t co nsider the co nseq uence of our actions when we attempt LO pa ss like a " world class star" with Novi ce plates! MIKE BLACHE AMA/CCS Novice 1187 Orange Park, FL Cheers for AMRA-Pros I recently attended th e AMRAPros flat track races in Florida which provided som e of the best ra cing I' ve been in . I think th e AMRA-Pros' hard compound tire and narrow rim rul e is a good thing in that it makes for multiple line raci ng that adds to the quality and exci tement of the flat track experience. Plus it helps to keep the cost of raci ng do wn . I would lik e to thank a ll th e officials who pu t on th e races. The annou ncer, Ja ck R hoads, did a great job . I wou ld lik e to give special thanks to starte r Gary Cox , tech inspector Ted Hubbard, and to race marshal Royal Sherbet and his wife Marcie and th ei r h ard working people. I believe because of the colossa l effort by these people that they will breathe new life back into the all American sport of flat track racing. They have set the exa m ple an d they are giving to th e sport what can benefit all th e riders, owners, sponsors, and, of course, th e most important person - th e spectator. At the same time 'they are giving th e racers the best thing of all - opportunity! FRED GUTIERREZ Dearborn, MI Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News, Inc.
