Riding a Two Bro thers Racing Duca ti prepared by form er Team Entrop y tuner Dan Kyl e, Erion started on the outside of ro w eigh t, worked his way th rough traffic and passed National Champion Pete J o hnson to take the win. Stan Friduss used his middle-of' the-fron t-row grid position to get the holeshot on his Moto-Cuzzi, bu t was immediately passed by Johnson be tween turns one and two. Johnson , ridi ng the Fast By Ferraci/Tsubakil Miche lin /Castrol -sponsored Ducati F-I, led through the infield and began - to stretch his lead on ' the . banki ng. Going into the ch icane on la p three, Erion missed a shift, grabbed the brakes and sta lled the motor, but quickly re-started it ' on the move , One la p later he passed Johnson on th e bac k straight to take the lead.
