low. By th e fourth lap th e order was still Davis, J ones and Carr , with Ingram fourth ahead of Orr, Brow, and Poovey. . Carr was keeping J o nes in h is sigh t but not finding it easy. "When I went o ut o n th e warm up la p , the back end ca me aroun d twice," Carr sai d. " T ha t's when I knew it would be a lo ng night." In~ram passed Carr a nd Bro w on the fifth lap to move into fifth p lace, ahea d of Poo vey and Durelle. H ad they finished in that order, J ones wou ld have been the Daytona cham pio n, a point that was n't lost on Carr. " I had my eye on J ones. I made sure whoever passed me passed him too," Carr said. H ad they tied on points, J ones wo uld have earned the title by virture of hi s two wi ns in the series. . By th e halfway mar k, Ingram was pr essing J ones in second and Brow had dr opped Carr to fifth, ahead of Durelle. Stauffer crashed unhurt in turn two a nd a lap later Orr pulled out when his pipe came loose. " When th e pipe came off, it lean ed the thing out and it wouldn 't shut off in th e turns," Orr said. " I just kep t mo ving backwards." Ingram th en made his move on J ones, driving past him com ing out of turn four and down the front straightaway. That made th e top three Davis, Ingram and J ones. Bro w was fourth and Poo vey was moving on Carr but slid out in turn two, mo vin g Durelle into sixth ahead of Lewis, Boody, a nd Farri s. In gram sta rted to close o n Davis, but ran ou t of laps after pulling even with the leader on the fin al lap. " I had trouble getti ng by Ronn ie," Ingram began. " If I'd have gotten by him sooner I co uld have had it. I was smelli ng my first Na tional. I just had to stuff it under Davis and see wh at hap pened." Wh at h appened?
