Honda and .Yamaha Motorcycles present the United States International GRAND PRIX HONDA. Come ride with us. YAMAHA \\e make the diff rence: e ':JMarlbom~ Anders Andersson of Sweden will attempt an upset Daytona victory. from Germany is now backed by the impressive an d professiona l H ein Ge ricke grou p of mo torcycle deal ershi ps in Europe. For man y Grand P rix riders a bi t of Florid a su ns hi ne is a good way to start th e year, but there is a serious side to it all, too. T he Daytona bankin g certain ly reveal s a ny speed deficie ncies very q uickly. Dr. John Eh rl ich 's EMC mach in es have always performed well on high speed circuits li ke Silverstone, H ocken he im a n d Da yton a. Scotsman Donnie McLeod, a very experienced a nd capable ri der bo th on short circuits a nd G P ven ues will be th e jockey, and Irishman Eddie Laycock will be racing th e Mi llar Racin g EMC. T he Dublin-based rider had cruel lu ck last year a nd co uld shock a few people thi s ti me. . J o hnn y Wi ckst ro m is b etter kno wn for his l 25cc Grand Prix ex ploits, but he ra n a 250 a t Dayto na last year, after he fina lly got it out of customs, a nd should do better thi s time o ut. He brin gs with h im the unknown Kar i Savolai nen. -Lu is Lavad o's claim to fam e is being the co usi n of form er .250cc World Ch am pion Carlos Lava do. T he na memay be th e same , th e skill level, wit ho u t being cruel, is no t! Enough th en of the 250s. What abo u t th e Grand Pr ix class of the Pro Twinsdid I hear you ask? I th ough t not, but I a m goi ng to tell you all th e sa me. Dave Pither, a name tha t will not ring many bells for Ameri can enth usias ts, will give th e new Spondo n fram ed Norton a run ou t, but th e best news of all is that Roger Marshall , th e ge n ia l, fri endly and tal ented British rider, will be o n the Cosworth that made an impression on the op position in th e hands of Aus tral ian Paul Lewis for th e past co u p le of seasons. . Not tha t I am happy to see Pau l Lewi s without a ride. Far from it. He raced alongside Fred Merkel in th e Ital ia n-based team last season; a nd like unlucky Marshall found himself without a deal for th is season. Both are too good to quit, and Marshall co uld perhaps find somethin g going for him if he wins th is race at Daytona , which he could. Stefan Caracchi will probab ly hav e other ideas of course. And the young Italian impressed at Da ytona last year. Another potential winner. Not the best ever overseas lineup for Daytona, th en , but quality, if not quantit y. - (SHOEI) Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey. CA .
