It was a lso celebra ted in simila r fashi o n with H yper Cycle being awarded the win with Dutchman second. , T he order was la ter reversed by AMA officia ls, giving Dutchman their second win in as man y races in the young seaso n. The reaso n lor th e decision occurred on lap 74 of th e 86-lap race when , whi le leadirig, H yp er Cycle' s Carry Andrew fail ed to mak e the chica ne and rode straight through th e acce ss road instead. According to co r ne r wor kers , Andrew fai led to acknowled ge a wor ker's flag to hol d position until he was clear of o ther racers. The race finished and u po n report of the in cident, A MA ICCS director Roger Edmondso n deci ded to assess Andrew a $100 fine while allowing th e resu l ts to stand. " Andrew did not gai n any obvio us advantage by taking th e shortc ut that would affect the ou tcome of th e race," Edmondso n said. After the winner's circl e awards had taken p lace, Du tchman 's Kevin Ren tzell a nd Lockh art 's Dal e Quarterl ey and Doug Brauneck ga thered with AMA officials to report th at Andrew had rid de n erratica lly , wit h Quarter ley adding th a t Andrew had almo st center-punched him when he came back o n the track. Edm ondso n the n confe rred with road racing referee Darrel Dovel who in turn ta lked with corn er workers about th e incident. T hey reported that no t on ly had Andrew ign o red th e corner worker's flag, bu t o ne of them had almost been ru n o ver by And rew. Co upled wi th these reports plus th e co mp laints of Ren tzell , Brauneck a nd Q uarterley, H yper Cycle was do cked a lap , givi ng the win to Dutchman. T he results became officia l on Monday, February 29, wi th Andrew unavail abl e for com ment. Following Dutchman an d H yp er Cycle were So ut h Florida Racin g, a . lap down on H yper Cycle with 84 la ps, Hi gh T ech Racing and early leaders Lockhart Racin g rounding out the top five. H igh Voltage R acing ro de its Ho nda CB600 H urricarie to the GTU win and 13th overall, covering 79 laps. Second pl ace a nd l Sth overa ll was Autobahn Society with Moore Racing finishing third a nd 16th overall ; bo th were Honda CB600 Hu rri cane-mourned. At th e sta rt it was Shorts o n the Team Targa Kaw asak i ZXIOOOleading the 76 teams in to turn one and beginn in g to build a lead by the time the field hit turn five. T he first casualty was Rowe and th e Kayo Ra cing Yam aha FZRIOOO when Rowe cras hed in the International H orsesh oe on the first la p. " I just got caugh t up in th e pace too early, the tire wasn't scuffed in . yet and I just lost it," Rowe sa id la ter. " It was my faul t. " As th e field comp leted th e first lap, Quarterl ey had tak en the lead with Rentz ell on th e Du tchman Suzu ki seco nd a nd Shorts third o n th e big Kawasaki. J uerink held fourth for High Tech, an d South Florida was . fifth. T he GTU class was a scra mble between Roswell Racing H onda of Cam Roos a nd Mike Smi th, the Island Boys on a 750cc Du cati ridden by Bill Wiedner , Jimmy Adam o and J oe La m iroult, and th e T ea m Miller American Suzuki 600 Ka tana of Mike Mooras and Gerry O lson.
