for second, and third place finisher Ulven. Howard took fourth a nd fifth went th e way of Johnson. In th e Junior portion o f th e race, Kawasak imounted Ch ad Brown bl azed to th e finish to net first in class beating fell ow KX jock eys Sh awn H ighland and Shawn Waring. Moto two was much d ifferent for th e gr oup in two ways. The first was that this time ther e were 27,000 spectators watching th em instead of Saturday morning's crowd o f llOO as th e cla ss' second mo to was run during a break in Friday night's professional co mpe t i t io n . T h e second was th a t H oward push ed h is Honda into th e lead and ba ttled throughout the eigh t lap motos, mostl y spe nt in a side-by-side configurati on. Howard held the hot line as th e duo approached th e finish with th e majori ty o f the crowd on its feet . McCormick a tte m p ted a last-ditch pass, which resu lted in a finish line cras h, but h is attem p t was well received by the spectators. McCo rmick took the overall win by virtue of h is 1-2 performances, while H ow ard 's seco nd mo to win , co m bined with a fir st moto fou rth , gave th e Port O rchard, Washington, rider seco nd ove ra ll; Ulven to ok third after 3-3 showi ngs. Bro wn co m ma nded th e seco nd J unior mot o to tak e a hard-earned I-I overall wi n followed by Hi g hl and (2-2) a nd Warren Baze (5-3). H oward ca rne - back three mo tos later to win a n eq ually exci ting 125cc Junior clas s fir st moto. Howard, who is new to th e 125cc ranks, mad e it appear as though he'd been a fiveyear veteran, navigated the wellrutted whoop-de-doos en route to his moto win with Kawasaki riders J eff J ustus a nd J esse Galle taking seco nd and thi rd. Mota two had T y Birdwell, who had sou r luck in mota one, take th e lead and a wire-to-wire win ab oard his H onda. H oward wasn 't far behind, a nd a t th e completi on p icked up th e overall win via 1-2 posti ngs. Yamaha rider Brett Bierek took th ird in m ota two followed by Justu s, Alex Kavaney, Gall e and Oregon 's Troy Fuller, who round ed ou t the top seven moto finishers in the da y's second largest class. Taking seco nd to Howard in the overa ll col u mn was Justus ( 2~ 4) and Bierek third aft er a 4-3 consistency. Rounding o u t the top five were Birdwell (8-1) and Galle (3-6). Birdwell , however, wasn't left o u t of the pi cture overa ll as the talented H o nda rider took both mo tos in th e 250cc Junior class. Birdwell , th e only Ama teu r in th e da y's program to clear th e double jumps th at only th e Pros cleared , used it to hi s adva n tage by stretching out a huge lead in moto one for a 12-second margin at th e co mpletion. Finishing seco n d 'to Birdwell in th e 25-rider moto was Suzuki rider Scott Browne; Kevin Durham took third. Birdwell 's double mota decimatio n came after devouring th e competition in the second contest. Birdwell again put the da y's la rgest deficit on th e com pe titio n leaving Eddie Garrish to swa p it out for second with Suzuki-mou nted T ro y Blake and Id aho 's Ph il Bridger s so me eigh t laps behind. Birdwell 's mota win , his third of th e day, capped o ff hi s sweep of th e class with Blake (4-3), Browne (2-7), Garrish (10-2) a nd Brid gers (8-4) fillin g the top five. Twenty-seven 125cc Beg inn er s ga te d for a no t he r o f th e da y' s thrillers. O ne of th e best battles came during the fir st co ntes t between Bobby Wilson a nd Brett Butler. The d uo qui ckl y separa ted th emselves from th e rema in der of the com petitio n and spe nt five lap s in a heat ed side -by-side ba ttle. Late in th e mot a Bu tler nabbed Wilson and rode away in a convincing style for th e moto win. Wilson , Casey H orseman , J ohn Bail ey and Cor ey Shaw fill ed the top five a t rn ot o 's end. Mo to two was Wilson's domain. Wilson sla m med the doo r shu t on Butler 's repeated advances a nd rod e smooth a nd co ns isten tly to th e finish to ea rn a hard-earned overa ll wi n after 2- 1 postings. Butler 's 1-2 sh owings netted seco nd and Bailey's 4-4 cons istency was good for th ird. Top o u t-o f-s ta ter was Ka wasa ki rid er R ich ard Po stm a wi th a sixth in moto o ne a nd an im p ressive third-pl ace fin ish in mo to two; Shaw finish ed fifth (5-5). A variety of out-of-staters were o n hand in a com bined Up th e Hill! Over th e Hill class. H onda-mounted Mike Tresch was o n th e gas in mota one a nd foug h t off Seattle's T ed DeVol in a wheel -to-whee l du el fo r first pl ace in the in creasingl y po pul ar Up the Hill class, which is open to riders 24-29 years of ag e. DeVol took com mand severa l laps lat er a nd wen t on to win with Tresch a nd top Over th e Hill finishers Chris Mori tz and U tah 's Dal e Bohm close behind. DeVol devo ured th e co m pe ti tio n in the second contest for a I-I sweep. T resch again too k seco nd in the mota and overa ll, G ra nt Eels was third. Mortiz, Bohm , Pete Ohman , R ichard Sa ther and Ca liforn ia n Ri ck Gl ass fill ed the top five in Over T he Hill com pe ti tio n.
