Hendon hauls in · Alabama HS win By Ronny Holland GRANT, AL, FEB. 7 Tony H endon grabbed the overall victory at round seven of th e MidSouth Winter H are Scrambles Series in Grant, Alabama. Hendon took the lead from th e start and piloted his ATK around the seven -m ile course consisting of icy paths, steep downhills and tight woods with no problems. George Waller ran a close second to Hendon until late in the race when Hendon turned on the after-burner. Cagiva mounted Larry Surles swept the 250cc class with a substantial lead over Gary Copland, who finished up second. Kawasaki rider John Giles led th e first two laps in the Super Senior class but la ter surrendered his lead to Emmett Cox. Cox then lost his lead to Charles Galbraith, who took the overall victory in the class. Kawasaki rider Kevin Barry su ffered from severe cuts to his neck due to tree limbs bu t was still able to take the win in the 200cc class. Results PRO: 1. Tony Hendon ; 2. George Walle r; 3. Becldngton blasts Hyman Myers MX By Athie Sanders 32 TALLAHASSEE, FL, JAN. 31 Jeff Beckington nailed overall wins in four classes, the l25cc A, 250cc A, l25cc Pro a nd 250cc Pro classes, during round five of th e Florida Motocross Club (FMC) Winter Series at Hyman Myers Speedway. Beckin gton wrapped up do uble-mote wins in each class except the l 25cc Pros. Brian Carroll edged him o ut of a first moto win, but fini shed second in moro two. Beckington said, "Everything went pretty smooth. In the first l25cc Pro moto I had the lead, went into a berm a little 100 hard , put on th e brakes and slid. The fall p u t me second." Derrick Roe was fastest off th e line at th e start of moto two , but Beck- ington p lowed ahead before they exi ted turn one leaving Roe 10 battle a hard charging Carroll. Carroll got under h im then moved in on Beckin gto n. As the two leaders pulled away from the pack Ashley Epps reeled in Roe then took over the third place position. He held it 10 th e finish. Roe nailed third overall with his 3-4 rnoto tally. John Sier and Dale Spangler rounded out the top five overalls, respectively. At the start of the first 250cc Pro moto Spangler led the pack. Earl May followed then moved into the lead but not for long. Beckingto n climbed from a midpack start to put it out front then pull away before the end of the first lap. Chuck Bell moved up to ride behind May but bailed and was unable to finish th e moto, Carroll picked through the ranks, as did Roe , 10 finish second and third behind Beckington, May and Spangler rounded out the top five. MOIO two belon ged to Beckington from start to finish. John Sier tagged beh in d the leader to finish second. May fell off the pace, a llowing Carroll to move into third, and Spangler p assed him as wel l. Bostrom captures San Jose TT By Bill Spencer SAN J O SE, CA, FEB. 7 Dave Bos trom a nd Jo hn Tavis p layed the hero roles in - th e Open Expert class during TT action on the o ne -th ird mile scrambles track at Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose. Bostrom was last into th e first turn o f the Open Expert show, but fashio ned a high- line pass into first place, taking over th e lead in turn two. . Tavis rode Rod Lake's ATK to seco nd place, finishing in front of third place rider Eric Larson and Gordon Rudy, who ca m e home fourth. In th e first of two Veteran mains; Gary Mil ewski stretched a slight lead into a big victory over Bob Meiring and Lake. Lynn George was running well but dropped out when his bike threw its chain. The main event in th e seco nd Veteran division fea tured a fierce three-way battle between three ATK riders. Jim O 'Con n er won the fight, topping secon d place Tavis and Bostrom, who ended up third. Bostrom chased Tavis early in the race while O 'Conner p layed catchup. The three ri ders fin ished in a dead heat at th e checkered flag. JJ I ( Elmiro Alvernaz worked hard for 'his wi n in th e 600cc Junio' cla ss, topping ATK-mou nted O ' C n ner and Yamaha rider Milewski? ~2 The Gonzales boys, Kevin ' an d John, finished first and third, respectivel y, in the 600cc Novice main event. Tim West made up the center of the Gonzales sandwich by taking second. Bob Meiring finished fourth. Yamaha-mounted J erem y Chisum won th e 250cc Novice class main event. Mark Bakhit survived a horrendous heat race crash to finish seco nd. Mike DePiano finished third over Michele DiSa lvo . Vintage bikes are playing a big part in the San Jose racing scene, and il was Lake, on a n old Honda, who topped the first division over BSAmounted Dan Ph illips. Seymour takes New York Scrambles win By Larry McBride BIN G H AMTO N, NY, J AN . 24 Bob Seymour skated 10 victory in the Novice class at the Sq uare Dea l Riders M.e. Winter Mu d and Snow Scrambles. Lots of snow an d ice kept the laps to a minimum with Seym ou r and others making only five circuits during the half-hour event while others made even less. Tom Houlian took the lead off the start and remained there for four laps and appeared to be headed for the win,' but on the las t la p he was overtaken by Seymour. The Expert victory was again taken b y G len Davis with some . steady riding and a little luck supplied by Randy Gardner and J im Spe ncer . Gard ner, a consis te nt winner, was the early leader but fouled a p lug before completing lap o ne. Spencer displaced G ardner for th e lead and stayed there for four goarounds, but m echanical p roblem s a llowed Davis to m ove into first a nd . take the win. Pi ckin g up his first trophy of th e season was Mi ke McKinney, who outdistanced the entire held of Senior B riders for six complete laps. .
