Believe it or not, I am in the process of acknowledging every card and letter that ha s been sent to me. It will just tak e a while. For those of you wh o purchased th e videotape Wh en The Going Gets . 'T ou gh to help me with my medical bills and my reh abilitation, I hope you have enjoyed th e tape and I ' appreciate your donation as it is the onl y money I have received to help with r< prts to walk again. For those ot you who donat ed money in my behalf to the Pro Riders Benefit Fund, your intentions were good and I thank you, but I have never seen a penny. This year has been a difficult adjustment period, however, there are a few indications that in time I could regain th e use' o f m y lower body. In my years of ra cing I developed the discipline and determination to work towards attaining m y goals. So far I have reached them all. Our new son, Sean Mitchell, has added a lot 0' pleasure to Gina 's and my life and has even added more incentive towards my attaining my ultimate goal. I will soon be heading to th e University of Miami to enroll in the Miami Project for some intense training and testing in hopes of enhancing my chances of recovery. The Miami Project is the group effort of doctors worldwide whose main concern is to cure spinal cord injuries. Again, I would like to thank you for your continued enco ura geme n t and support. I'll never give up. DAVID BAILEY Axton, VA Awaiting the clarion call The frozen heartland aw aits th e clarion call of spring. Who ever edited Bill Herndon's story abou t th e January 10 Frosty Ca ctus Enduro bl ew it. The event sh ould have been called a timekeeper's " deligh t," not a " n igh tm are." All th e chec kpoin ts were spot on but so me were well hidden o r disguised. Those wh o en tered th e event got to read th e story as it was written (they printed it in th e event results) and there wa s no m ention o f a timekeeper's ni~htmare. PA UL FLANDERS Arcadia, CA Ride on down An ope~ response to Grant Wen~ ley of Calgary, Canada, who IS interested in renting a bike to ride . over the Laguna Seca GP weekend: If yo u want a motorcycle in Laguna for th e GP, why don't you ride th ere? It's not that far from Calgary. Try it, you 'll love it. DAVE SPORER Lansing, MI Rent al bikes I saw a letter in your February 3 issu e from Grant Wens ley of Canada in which he 'asked about motorcycle rentals. Well, I rent bikes. I'm not in th e Bay Area, but I will be leading to u rs to West Coast races this year a nd th e Laguna Seca GP is th e first one. Am erican Motorcycle Rentals is located in Los Alamitos, California, about 20 minutes south of Long Beach . I have been in business for three years and in addition to leading tours I rent bikes year round. WAYNE C. MURPHY American Motorcycle Rentals 10924 Portal Dr. Los Alamitos, CA 90720 213/594-890 I American Motorcycle Rentals rents a complete ran~e of motorcycles and a rate sheet IS available for the asking . . . Editor. Dese rt racers You 'rea lly know when you are around good people. That's why I feel that it's more than necessary for me to express my gratitude and thanks to those wonderful people who su p ported me through my 1987 racing season. Thanks to all m y sponsors Yamaha Motor Corp. , Answer Product s, Sport Track Co ., Gaerne, Silkol en e, Tsubaki, Sco tt, Graydon , Circle Industries, I.M .S., WD-40, Bell H elmets, NGK, Alexander Racin g Specs., Plasti cwerks, A&B Superro llers a nd Octarnax, Thanks to Wes Anderson jr., wh o is without a doubt o ne of th e reasons I a m go ing to hold th e Number One p la te for District 37 for th e '88 season. While I wa s running second, five m iles from th e fini sh in an event last yea r, m y c ha i n b roke. With out h esita ti on Wes pull ed o ver a n d proceeded to remove hi s ma ster link so I co u ld repair m y bike an d finish eigh th in m y class. Wes waited until I co u ld re tu rn a nd return hi s master link so he co u ld fin ish last. Without that finish , I would have been secon d on the year rather th an first. T ha nk you a ll for a grea t 1987. I'm lookin g forward to an even better 1988. Wi th out a doubt, desert people are th e best. Thanks everyo ne! MIK E SIX BER Y Simi Valley , CA Th e word " n ig h t m are" wasn 't in tended to be derogatory . It was added to the story by an associate editor who rode the roen t and its use reflected the fact that the Frosty Cactus ' Enduro was aimed more toward timekeeping than testing a rider's ability to go fast on the trail. In an enduro where the top five riders drop less than one point, timekeep ing can be a n ightmare for the riders invo lv ed . But there's nothing wrong untl: that; it's part of the gam e . . . Editor. Daytona happen in gs Once again it's time for Daytona Once again readers will look to Cycle News for .info about what's happenin g , where to go and what to do at Daytona.
