James Domay coasted across the finish line,
out of gas, to score his first-ever Formula
USA victory at Willow Springs International Raceway. Third overall in the Willow
Springs Motorcycle Association 1987 Series Domay took

GSXR750, Domay turned lap times
in the 1:28 range throughout the 10lap event. Though his lead stretched
to over 10 seconds, Domay was
almost nipped at the finish line by
second place Wes Cooley on the
Team Hammer Suzuki endurance
bike. Finishing third, right on
Cooley'S heels, was Suzuki
GSXRlIOO rider Chuck Magnusson.
A multi-bike incident during the
California Superbike- School Challenge Cup Novi ce race earlier m the
day caused an hour delay and left
oil on the racing line through highspeed turns eigh t and nine. The
accident was triggered when Larry
Spektor blew the motor of his
Kawasaki GPz 550 and two riders
behind him went down in the oil.
The race was red-flagged, but since
the leaders had already passed the
starUfinish line and no red flag was
displayed at turn five (as is the
custom), all they saw was a waving
yellow at turn six. Leaders Carl
Fleckner crashed hard with his
Honda VFR750 f1yingoverthe heads
of the riders who crashed there
previously. Second place Robert
