In spiration from above After reading my first issue of Cycle News, the January 20 issue, I was reall y impressed and even more turned on to motocross. I lost my fiance, Dou glas Carl' Novack, on November 8, 1987, while he was riding his Honda XR600. He was going to teach me to ride this sp ri ng. That is how he proposed to me - by asking if I would ride with him. Since he died I'v e been riding and even doing a little hill climbing, hi s specialt y. . " It really gets in your blood," Tom Croft, Dou g 's riding buddy, told me, and now I kn ow it's true. Cycle N ews reinforces th e fun and advent ure : T he spo rt is overwhelmingly I . - '1~ and I can understand wh y lJuug was so in love with it. 1 don't kn ow how oft en death occurs in motocross, bu t if o ther ' women have lost th e men they love to motocr oss yet still understand and a p preciate th e sport , TIl see you at th e ra ces. I am trying to contact two forme r co ntributors to your publication, Ron and Mary Grothe. They were respon sibl e for an art icle in th e June 21, 1978 Cycle News on Mike Baldwin . I don 't th ink they've h ad anything in your publicati on for quite some tim e, but if you co uld let them kn ow I'm look ing for th em , I'd be very grateful. NORMAN E. GAINES, JR. Apt. II C 28 Field ston e Dr. Hartsdal e, NY 10530 Earth First! Thanks for th e discussion of j he religious cu lt Earth Fir st ! Seem s to me nature-worshippers hi storically start ou t revering life, but in evitably degenerate to ceremonial human sacrifice. It used to take cen turies. Earth First! must be very adva nced - th ey are 'already killing in nocent people, and th ey have just begun th eir Thousand-Year Reich. No t th at our tim e has been free from wa ckos : Nazis (kill for th e master race); Marxists (kill for th e , inexorable flow of history); H ashish in (kill for a quick tri p to Paradise); Shiite Muslims (get kill ed for a quick trip to Paradise). Cla ssic cults use partial truths or warm inten tions to I) support a few leaders in lives of power and privilege, 2) slaughter infidel s, wholesale, with no remorse, and 3) give hyperexcited meaning to th e grim lives oT . tunnel-vision, drones ~ho, unable to create, ca n feel briefly important planning and executing act s of destruction and cruelty. . When I explain about motorcycling to militant classmates or coworkers, they gen erally treat me like a shortsighted thrill-seeker with no sense of the Greater Good of Mankind. Who are the y kidding? To ride motorcycles means to be cautious while pushing the perfor- ma nce envelope, look Eternity in th e face, learn to use too ls and master elemental mechanics, ge t to kn ow people's i ntere sts and us e each o thers' talen ts for mutu al benefit, and develop the financial skills to . keep running not just our scoo ters but stable, sa tisfying famil y lives as well . We regularly look forward to ou tdoor adventure, our mem ories fast-forward videos of the heights of th e human experie nce. I mark 25 years in motorcycling this year, too. Rem emb er the Nifty, Thrifty Honda Fift y? The 150 and 300 Dr eams? Wonder Wart-Hog beating th e invin cible Sumbichis on hi s Allstate Slo-Ped? I strapped my cru tches to the side of my Sport 65 and zoom ed away into my future, dreaming of Oilwood, th e Isle of Man , and 12-cylinder, 48-valve 125s with pistons th e size of penci l erasers. Wh o wou ld have thought th e road wo uld have led here. A pro fi table, healthy H arl ey, showroom roc kets Agostin i co ul dn't have had for an y price, straigh t-four Bimmers, quiet dirt bikes that virtually fly, fourwheelers even G ranny ca n ride! And w here w i ll m otorcycl in g be . in ano the r 25 years? Good go lly, th e mind boggl es! As we hang off, dra gging our kn ees in the upcoming turns of life, stay wit h us , Cycle Neuisi Ga s it up! TOMMY BRIGHT Corpus Christi, TX Bright road raced with AFM in 19691975 and as an AMA Novice in 1973, founded th e CUTTent Sears Po int corner worker crew and wrote the procedures manual, and served as AFM North vice president for 15 years. Bright is curren tly th e president of Computation Planning, Inc. and says he's " somew here in Texas, hiding out from People Last! death squads." .. . Editor; for subsidized water from 160 to 960 acres . Who runs th ese 96O-acrefarms? Oil co m pa nies . Th e Southern Pacific Ra ilroad. Big ca mpa ign con tri bu tors . The Sierra Club is more or less blindly going to buy anything Alan Cranston tell s th em . Fortunately, th ere are o ther envi ro n men ta l groups th at recognize that th e good . Sen ator's favors to agri cu lture have caused more env iro nmen tal damage than all th e off-readers in California . 1£ you want documentation, it all ca n be found in The Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner. You can buy it at your local bookstore for less than $10. I especially recommend that you study pages 12-13, 320, 352-353, and 502 if yo u want to understand what . makes Alan Cranston tick (and vote). Pages 349-350 and 385-386 will give you a good idea of who pays him to do it. As for my sta tement that agriculture ca uses m ore environmental damage than off-road vehicle use, the whole book is a testimony to that simple fact. . ROBERT G. HUENEMANN Hollister, CA Top ofthe food chain In reference to your editor's reply to Mr. Bru se's l etter in th e J anuary 20 issue: Wh o appointed you or any o ther hum an be i ng G od? Ju st because -hornosapiens are a t the top of the food chain does not make us superio r to and allow us to show total disregard for o ther living plants and animal s. We (huma n) beings have no right to wa nton ly destroy nature, since it never has been and never will be O UTS to destr oy. It is pompous atti tudes such as these that lead to the tremendou s pollution and destructi on of th e eart h's natural resources. There has to be change in this use, abuse and discard mentality if any of th e eart h is to be left for future generations to enjoy. . I don't agree with acts such as the one done by Earth First! during the Barstow-to-Vegas run , but as a devoted motorcyclist and environmentalist, any magazine which holds an d/or expresses views such as yours will not be receiving any of my money. So, wh en my subscrip tio n · expires I will not be renewing. D.SWAIN Long Beach , CA Horky retort Re th e letter from J erry McDonald in the January 20 issue: I resent anyone referr ing to my deceased husband, Jules Horky, as having been a " p up pet" for an yone! During his 29 years as the AMA's com petitio n director, he devotedly carri ed out th e rul es and regulations that were voted on by the Competition Committee and th en wh en that was di ssol ved by th e Competition Co ngress. . The "Michigan dealer " sure didn 't kn ow J ul esl MILLIE HORKY Port Orange, FL Th e Cad illac Dese rt . When is a desert not a desert? Wh en it has an unlimited sup ply of water subsidized by th e taxpayers, in which case it becomes - a farm! Which is why we should study the langu age of Senate Bill 7 very carefu ll y, especially the last minute addi tio ns. We know that Senator Cranston wants to keep us ou t of the desert. But what is his record on agriculture? The a nswer is that he was a major factor in getting the law changed to raise the size of farms that qualify Flat t rackin' f am il y We would like to take this oppor- · tu nity to th ank the Springsteens, Jack and Debbie Kolbe, and Jon and Sarah Hatcher for their delightful hospitality while we were in Flint, Michigan, during th e Inv itational Indoor Pro Ice Ra ce Serie s.
