Former multi-time Nationa l and Supercross Champion David Bailey, paralyzed in a cras h last year, was present at the January 30 Anaheim Super Crown of Stadium Motocross and worked with announcer Larry Huffman as a color commentator. " I' m continuing to work harder than I ever did, " Bailey said. " It would be good to get better and race, but rea listically I just want to get better and take things from there. If I get movement five minutes from now, I'll be racing. But the lo nger it takes the more questionable it (a return to racing) WIll be since it will take a few years for rehabilitation." Team Suzuki's Donny Schmit was forced to watch the Anaheim event from the stands after chipping a bone in his shoulder while practicing earlier in the week. Earls Court Exhibition Center in London, England, will be the site of the 1988 International Bike Show, October 10-16. England's largest bike show alternates between Birmingham and London each year; last October's show in Birmingham drew a record crowd of 109,000. • HIRED : Mark Smith as Acerbis Plastica USA's new product/ warehouse manager; Smith was formerly with Husqvarna USA as their national service manager; according to Bill Berroth, marketing director of Acerbis USA. on top of his duties as warehouse manager, Smith will be responsible for all new application testing. and testing of mounting hardware kits and mounting instructions. Erik Bue ll reports that both Jay Springsteen and Gene Church will n de Buell R- IO Os in the P ro Twi ns O G P class at Dayto na. Springsteen will use a modified Harley-Davidson Evolution engine. There are eight of the original 50 Buells still available and information on them can be obtained at Harley-Davidson dealers nationwide. The 1988 Buells have not been released, but Buell says they'll feature Harley's Evolution engine. Kawasaki ride r Sean Thornton of Californ ia has belatedly been named the 85cc (12-13) Olympiad Champion of the 1987 Florida Winter Olympic Mini Olympics. According to _ the event's promoter, WorldSports. the change was made to conform with the event's age rules. The purse for the February 20 Coors Super Crown of Motocross at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California, is $35,000, not $32,050 as indicated on the rider entry blanks. Entries are still being accepted for the event in both the 125 and 250cc classes (deadline February 5). The Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club of T oro nto, Ohio, will hos t the Can-Am Challenge Vintage T rials, an AMA-sanctioned event, at cable's Campgrounds in Toronto, O h io , April 16-17. The event is part of an East Coast vintage trials series being put together by Stan Jakubaszek of th e Corridor Trials Group of Robbinsville, New Jersey. The fina l rou nd w ill take place at Daytona with the run ning of the annual Daytona Amateur Supercross on Monday, February 29 . March I is the tentative date for a hearing on AB36, California's proposed mandatory he lmet law, according to a spokesperson for the California Senate Transportation Committee. The measure was approved last year by the Assembly Transportation Cornmi ttee and heard twice in the senate committee before being placed on hold until the 1988 legislative session. The AMA, which encourages helmet use but opposes mandatory helmet laws, recently sent an a lert to California members asking them to contact com m ittee me mbers and urge them to vote against the bil!. Current 250 and 500cc Motocross National Champion Rick Johnson has been working with Truth for Youth, a non-profit organization, on an anti-drug and alcohol video. The video, which features race footage of Johnson and an interview conducted by two youths, will be distributed to schools and yo uth groups and is designed to stimulate discussion on substance abuse. J oh nson hopes the video "will h elp kids make it through life...and ' smooth o ut the bumps of growing up (without turning to drugs or alcohol)." Northern California dirt tracker Andy Tresser. who turned in the weekend's best performance by a Junior ri der during the opening rounds of the 600cc National Championship Dirt Track Series in San Francisco, California, January 23-24. was riding a special Ron Wood -prepared, Brown Brothers Wood-Rotax, not a Harley-Davidson as we reported last week. Mike Baker/Kurt Pfieffer (Ya rn) topped the 250cc class and the Frank Chase/John Bra asch (Ya rn) team collected first in the 125cc division. .According to CMC president Stu Peters, the January 24 round of the CMC/Dodge Truck Golden State Nationals, held at Carlsbad, California, will be televised on April 17 on cable television's The Nashville Network. The show will feature action from the 250cc Pro and M ini Expert races. The 125 and 500cc Pro races were also taped and will be shown in early May. Check your local cable listings for exact times. The American Historic Ra cin g Motorcycle Association (AH RMA) has extended the deadline for entering th e Dayto na Cycle Week vintage road race and MX races . The Commerce, Consumer and Monetary Affairs subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives held hearings January 28 on the "adequacy and effectiveness " of recent consent decrees (negotiated settlements) between ATV manufacturers and the Con sumer Product Safety Commission. The hearings were chaired by staunch ATV critic Doug Barnard (D-Georgia) and included testimony from several ATV opponents, including former CPSC Commissioner Stuart Statler. " The ' proposed consent decree will , not reduce the unacceptably high levels of deaths and injuries becausewarnlnqs and training are not sufficient to reduce the toll from ATVs. " said Barnard. I The AMA Coors San Diego (Ca li fornia) Supercross h as been canceled and replaced by ro u nd two of Mickey T homp son Entertainment Group's Coors Super Crown of Stadium Motocross Series. The MTEG Super Crown race w.ill be held in San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium on February 20 - the original site and date for the now defunct 1988 San Diego Supercross. San Diego Supercross tickets already purchased by southern California race fans will not be honored at J ack Murphy Stadium the nigh t of the Super Crown race. They m us t be returned to Ticketron for refunds. Tickets for the rep lacement race, th e Coors Super Crown of Stadi u m Motocross , can be purchased a t T'icketrnaster.
