Jeff Emig (471, winner of the 125cc Intermediate Division Two class, leads third overall finisher Chad Pederson. Emig went 2-2. Vernon Morgan (91 ho leshots the 125cc Jr. Division One first moto. Ryan Hughes took second in the 125cc Int. Division Two class. .McClain masters Carlsbad GSN By Ken Faught CARLSBAD, CA, JAN. 23 Yamaha-mounted Michael McClain used a consistent 2-1 score to claim the overall win in the 125cc Jr. class at Carlsbad Raceway for the fourth round of the CMC Golden Sta te MX Nationals for th e sportsm an riders. More th an 1300 racers came to battle. Vern on Morgan led Darrin 26 Channel, Tiger Garcia , Will ie Stewart and Ty Barber early in th e first 125cc rnoto. Stewart wasted no tim e a nd q uic kly passed Garcia for th ird. As th e pack ca me aro und for th e co mp letio n of la p o ne positions started to cha nge. McCl ain , wh o gated ninth was now in fourt h , with H onda-pilot T ravis Mu sselm an in fifth . Ga rcia moved back to sevent h . Whi le Morgan began to pull away,' all eyes were focused on th e ha rd charge cha llenge by Sco tt Takacs. Takacs who gated around 20th was now in six th and ca tc hing the leaders. T akacs' charge soo n came to a sud den end whe n his bike seizer, at the bottom of Ra ttl esnake G ul ch . Ba ck up fro nt, Mc Clain was second ahead of Channel, Musselma n, and J eff Davis catching Morga n. But wh en the checkered £J ag came o ut, Morgan took the win over McClai n, Ch annel , Mussel ma n, and Davis. ' On ce agai n th e Kaw a sak i mounted Morgan took the hol esho t ahead of Ch annel, McClain, Barber and Peter Wi ckersh am. Morgan's lead soo n ended as he cras hed back to sevent h handing McClain the lead . After wa tchi ng Morgan cras h, McClai n bega n to take it easy o n th e bumpy Carlsba d course. McClain, however, soon los t his lead when Barber came £lyin g down the famed Carlsbad Freeway. McC lain was now a close second ahead of Wickersham, Channel a n d 'Chri s Ridgewa y. Ridgeway quickly disposed of Channel as did Morga n. As th e pack received th e checkered £Jag McCla in agai n was first afte r Barber crashed out whi le leading. McClain went on to take the wi n over Wickersham, Rid geway, Morgan, and Channel. Barber finished 11th. A 2-1 gave McClain the overall; Morgan was second with a 1-4; Ch annel's 3-5 earned him third, and a 6-3 gave Ridgeway fourth. Ontario's Bryan Ho ldren used a perfect I-I score to win the 125cc Divi sion Two Junior class. As th e pack rounded . the first corn er, Holdren holesho t Nick Morgan, 'Dave Castillo, Roger Saenz and JeH Murphy. Castillo soon passed Morgan and bega n- to wo rk on Holdren . Holdren, feeling the pres sure from Castillo began to pick up his pace and slow ly p ull away. While H oldr en was openi ng up his lead, Saenz was passi ng Morga n and setti ng after Cas tillo. On the third lap, .Saenz go t by Castillo and , pursued H oldren. On the last lap Saenz mad e an a ttem p t for fir st wh ich ' fell short, as he slid o u t handing Cas tillo an easy second. H ol dren too k th e win ahea d of Cast illo , Saenz, Morgan, and Mik e . McClo ud . When the ga te dr opped at th e start of the second mot o, McCloud led H o ld ren , Ca st illo a nd Mo r gan. Wit hin a lap the top five ru nners . swapped posi tions with H oldren leading McCl oud, Dar rin Bri ggs, Mike Di ££en ba u g h a nd Br ad Fletcher. DiHenbaugh looked hungry and was all over Briggs waiting for a mistake. Briggs succumbed to the pressure and bobbled, which allowed Di££enbaugh to pass. DiHenb augh soo n ma de a victim o ut of McCloud and took com ma nd of second. Suzuki-pilot J on Berg soo n brok e i nto th e to p five a fter p a ssin g Fletc her a nd Briggs and was now fourth. T he fin al lap saw Berg mo ve into third wi th Mark Hi gham tak ing over fourth. McCloud wh o on ce led th e mo to was fifth . H oldren event ua lly claimed a n easy moto win o ver Di££enbaugh , Berg, Higham and McCloud. ' . Mi ssouri 's J eH Emig won the 125cc Di vision Two Interm edi at e . class without even winning a moto. . At the start of th e first race, Ryan Hugh es took the holesh ot over Shawn .Huggins; Emig, T roy DalIansky and Michael Chamberlain . Emi g soo n displaced Huggins and began chasi ng Hugh es. While Emi g was trac king down Hugh es, J immy Lewis brok e into the top five after passi ng Ch amb erl a in. Dallen sk y soo n took away th ird from Huggins, who was also passed by Lewis. On the th ird la p Huggi ns fell com pletely out of th e top five and occupied ni nth. Up front Emig passed Hugh es and began to ma ke m istak es. The following lap Em ig made o ne mis take too many and found h imself o n the ground with Hugh es in the lead. Emig quickl y remounted a di stant secon d. . As th e race neared the end, Arizo na's J immy Button moved into fou rt h ahea d of Ch ris Neal. Hugh es cla imed the win over Em ig, Lewis, Button and Neal. J e££ Barbacovi led Emig, Bubba Eric kson, Neal , and Hugh es at th e sta rt of th e seco nd m o to . Em ig quickly overpo wered Barbacovi and moved into th e lead. Ch ad Pederson , who.ga ted I Ith , moved into fifth , as Eric kson a nd hi s Cagiva dropped to sixth. Wi thi n a lap Pederson was in third gai ni ng on Em ig and Neal. On the th ird lap Pederson pi lo ted hi s Yamaha around Nea l into second. The last lap saw Pederson reel in Emig and make a pass . Pederson took a narrow w in ov er Emig, Hu~hes , Neal and Mike Tripes. Sim i Valley 's Mike Crawford was ab le to withstand p ressure from Dannon Burg to win the 500cc Junior class. First mo to action saw H on da-pilot Dave Fernandez ta ke the ho lesho t over Cra wford, Chuck Bagwell , Burg and J aso n Will ia m s. Bur g soon passed Bagwell and Crawford and set after Fern andez. On the third lap Burg found his way around Fernandez and into a clear lead. A lap later Crawford also passed Fernandez and too k over his position. Bur g took th e win with a na rrow two-seco n d cushion over Crawford, Fernandez, Williams and Bagwell. Cra wford sta rted th e second mo to off rig ht by pulling a clea n holeshot. Close beh in d Crawford were Fernandez, Bu rg , Will ia m s a nd Maj o r Alford. Burg again quickl y disposed of Fern andez and set after Crawford. On th e third lap Burg made a bid on Fernandez in a tight horseshoe. Fernandez retaliated a nd stu ffed Burg in to th e fence ca using Burg to lose his bal an ce and a lmos t fall.
