" Eddie (Arnet) was right beh in d me goi ng o ut on the loop and we had a great ra ce," said Ash craft. " H e passed me and led it for abou t 10 . feet, a nd th en he cras hed go ing down a rock downhill. I passed h im back abou t eigh t miles into it a nd he tried passing me all th e way for the nex t 25 to 30 mi les." Arn et was no t the on ly problem that Ash cra ft faced. "T here was a rocky uphill in the first fo ur m iles and I got a front flat," Ashcraft said. "I had th at all the way, but th e course was fairl y fast after that so it didn't matter too much ." Wi th two footpegs back on th e bike, Krause was pushing hard to catch up from th ird. " Dan and Eddie were in front of me going out o n th e second loop and I cou ld see th e two of them going at it ," he said. " I was hoping they would wear each other out so I co uld get up th ere with th em ." Krause did not have to wait for long. "I went over th e bars a couple of times tryin g to pass Dan a nd I was getting pretty so re, " Arnet said. "Then I h it some thing. I never saw wha t it was but I was going wide open in fifth gear so I flew over th e bars and la nded reall y hard. " I broke my collar bo ne on the throttle side but I didn 't kn ow it at the tim e," said Arnet. " I pi cked th e bike up a nd started going again. I though t I was still going to finish second, but the n it started hitting me and I just rod e back to my tru ck real slowly." . Arnet 's misfortune put Krause in to second overall but tim e was running out.
