" Ricky did what I did in the first moto," said Ward. " He got out in front, and I was behi nd H olland a nd Broc, and that held me up a littl e. The sun was really bad. Being back in th ird and in th e dust, it was reall y hard picking lines, a nd I was ma king a lot of m istak es." Glover, who finished third overa ll, said, " It went o kay, today . My arms pumped up, and the second moto went abo ut th e sa me. Those guys just went a little bit faster th an me. It's ni ce to be able to at least ea t their dust; at least th ey're th at close. I can see 'ern still and th ey're righ t there, I just need a little work." T he Golden State Na tiona ls are the fir st to p -level ra ces Glover 's competed in since breaking his leg last April. " It (the leg) feels fin e, and I don 't really notice it. It 's prett y mu ch all healed. I think I'm riding better now than I have in my wh ol e life, but so is everybody else." Healey left favored-to-win Suzuki's Donny Schm it a nd th e rest of th e ' pack in h is du st at the start of th e firs t 125cc Pro mo to. Brooks immed ia tely ex tended h is lead slig htly, while Winn closed in on the Cagiva ride r. Wi th the whi te flag in sight, Broo ks was in command, but second was still up for grabs, and Winn wanted to steal it away from Healey. But Healey had h is ow n ideas and fended off Winn as th e checkered flag flew. Even thoug h Broo ks captured th e moto win, Heal ey's 3-2 ta lly was good enough for the overall. Fo urth in th e moto went to Davis, wrappin g up second, while fifth went to Lewis, who climbed up from ninth. " In the firs t mo to I used the wrong (exha ust) pi pe ," said Brooks. " We were trying a low-end/mid-ra nge pi pe, th inking the ground would be tacky today, bu t it wasn 't and yo u needed a rev pipe. It wo rked a lo t better in th e second mo to. It p ulled the hills better." Breker had a relatively easy time in th e first 500cc P ro rnoto.
