GRANT WENSLEY Calgary, Albert a, Canada Is there an yon e in th e San Francisco.Monterey area who would care to rent motorcycles to Grant and his friend in early April? Drop us a line and we' ll relay the information to them...Editor. Hard riding/working enthusiast I want to thank Kawasaki of Riverside (California) for donating the Kawasaki Mojave 250 for the raffle at the 1987 Barstow-to-Vegas Hare & Hound. I won the ATV at th at dr awing on Nov ember 29 at the Hacienda Hotel in Las Vegas durin g the District 37 awards banquet. I am 20 and I have been partieipating in th e Bvto- V race for the last five years. Two years ago I finished seco nd in my clas s, and in 1987 I trophied again . My whole fami ly belon gs to the Training Wh eels M.e. and has been riding off-road motorcycl es for about 10years. We have been writing letters to our senator and other politicians a nd sup port our spor t in every way we can. I want Kawasaki of Riverside to know that we ar e very grateful for their support and for th eir donating the two new Kawasakis to support our legal ' defense fund which helps to keep the Bvto- V race aliv e. Thanks for supporting our right to good family fun in th e Ca lifornia desert. CH RIS SWANSON Anaheim, CA Morally acceptable? The letter is in response to Hank Bruse 's letter in which he defended Earth First! O n November 7,1987 , spiked trails in the Goldbar, Washington, area caused at least 20 flat tires , windows were smashed on unattended trucks, an unattended dirt bike was pushed over a cliff, too ls were stol en , wh eel lugs were loosened on trailers (o ne whee l came off on the highway), and observed trials trail and section markers were tom down and littered around. Earth First! claimed responsiblity via pos ters which state the y will not allow motorcyclists to " destroy" the Goldbar ar ea. The area is not very large and has been used for trials, enduros, hare scra m bles and trail riding for a t least 20 years. There is a powerline road, logging roads; Ca t trails from loggi ng, and about 20 miles of trails, mo st of which follow old railroad grades fro m logging proj ects years ago, How did the act ions of Earth Fir st ! slow th e "j uggerna ut of develop· ment?" I wo nder how th ey wou ld feel if someo ne, maybe even one of their ow n, was kill ed du e to the loo sening of lug nuts. An d how much o f Mother Earth will it take to replace the thi ngs th ey destroy in order to sto p the " destructio n of th e pl an et?" I am sure th at the maj ority of peop le, no t just OR V users and loggers, would di sagree th at th eir techn iq ues are " mo ra lly accep table" and that they try " to ensure th e safety of allconcemed".as Mr. Bru se states in his letter. RO NAL D GRAY Renton , WA Thugs and terrorists I wholeheartedly agree with your response to Mr. H an k Bruse's letter, In defense of Eart h Firs tl, in the J an uary 20 issue ·of Cycle News. However, I don 't think you did justice to Earth Firstl's method of operations. Firs t and foremost , to reiterate on Dav e Holeman's column, Earth . First! "members" are terrorists. They a re no different than any other terr orists that we read about daily or spend millions of dollars to co mbat in a ll areas of the world. Anyone, wh ether individual or or~nization, who actively kills and maims people in order to perpetuate their beliefs is either in the armed services or a murderer. Well publicized cases of Earth Fir st l's actions such as tree spiking make th em cowardly capital cr i m in a ls. O f course, th ere are some times justifications for terrorist activities, but to my mind never in the United States or any other co untry such as ours where you are free to vote and speak freely to influence o thers concerning your beliefs. The fact that an extremist senator from my home state can bring a bill before Congress to den y mil lions of acres of p ublic land to the public demonstrates the power of people with a will to acco mplish someth ing in this country. I urge anyone who knows of Earth Firstl's activities or their members to report them to their loca l police. H id in g behind some half-baked justification for murder as they do should be condemned. I think the thugs of Earth First! should be exposed for what they are (and are not) and dealt with according to our normal sense of justice In this country. sco'rr TAGGART Pine Grove, CA Mile and hillclimb info Can you tell me the date of the 1988 spring mile that's been run at th e Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose, California, in the past as part of the Winston Grand National Seri es? Also, can yo u tell me the date and location of any hillclimb event that's within 1500 miles of O lympia, Washington? MAC HANCOCK Olympia, WA Every issue of Cycle News con tains a Calendar section. At the beginning of th e Calendar sectio n you'll find schedu les of World and N ational Champ ion sh ip eve n ts . You obviously haven't been paying atten· tion because th e AMA G rand Power Valve retort Normall y I would consider the so u rce upon reading a sar castic mi ssive like th e " O n the lin e" letter by th e Pennsylvania turkey who didn 't bother to read my letter clo sely before jumping in to criticize som ething he obviously knows no thing abo ut. I refer to Mr. Don Li ngle and his unsolicited criticism of a very rep utab le Yamaha dealer. This gentleman has served in this capaci ty for 25 years and has executed " Yamaha policy" so well th at he was hon ored wit h an all expe nses paid trip to J apan , including a tour of the factor y and several awards. H e would never even thi nk of selling a race bike in th e crate to just anyo ne. as Mr. Li n~le implies. . For you information, Mr. Lingle, it is not Yamaha policy for the deal er to dismantle and inspect the engine on a new dirt bike. The factory tests each engine and installs it in the frame. Also , the rear wheel , seat, tank, and Monoshock are installed by th e factory. The onl y item s requiring assembly by the dealer are th e front wh eel, handlebars, levers, and as sorted control cables, etc. Truthfully, so little is left for the dealer to do that anyone off the street could probably assemble a modern dirt bike with little diHicultyl Yet yo u impl y that my son, " Goober," who has been a qualified Yamaha mechanic for 10 years, as well as an expert tuner, porting and polishing speci a lis t, susp.ension expert, etc., lacks the abilit to put a racing bik e from the crate into winning race conditionl I£ the bik e in question had been assemb led in your shop (assum ing you have one), Mr. Lindle, the resu lts woul d h a ve been the same (a n inverted Power Valve, not a stu ck o ne)! .
