David Thayer be at Kelly Wade for the o ve ra ll victory in the 5 0 0 cc Novice
class at Los Angeles County Raceway.
Pounds seemed to ga in on Hicks
up through la p eight, then fell back;
he remained in second to the end of
the mota. Truchinski lost th e seat
on his bike in lap six and took almost
a full lap retrieving it and holding
it on with his knees. He eventually
finished seventh, while Shackleford
came in third.
Pounds got the holeshot in moto
two and led for six laps with H icks
righ t on his exhaust pi pe every inch
of the way. T he pressure finally got
to Po unds and he went too high o n
a soft berm near the end of la p seven.
H ick s cut under a nd romped away
for an easy win and overall first
mon ey. After H icks went by, Pounds
relaxed so m uc h he was a lmost
caught by Shackleford , bu t snapped
ou t of it in time to fin ish second
agai n . Shack le ford to o k thi r d
overall.
Bubba Erickso n dominat ed th e
125cc Interm edi at es, stayi ng in the
lead almost every inch of the way in
both mo tos to take the overall. Ton y
Qualls had :a second kind of da y.
Qu all s sta rted last as the field left
the. line for rnoto o ne a nd wor ked
hard to finish second. In rno to two ,
Qualls was in the lead at the drop
of the gate, but finished second again
for second overall.
Scott Murphy romped and
stomped on the other 250cc Intermediates in rnoto one with another
Kawasaki rider, De n n i s Urban ,
p icking up second.
Murphy didn 't read the starter as
well in mota two and came off the
line in fourth. Todd Bro ussar d had
the lead from the beginning to take
the win, but had a poor first moto
and had to settle for second overall.
Murphy made a great charge in an
unsuccessfu l attempt to ta ke the
moto right at the flag . H is second
was sti ll good for first overall.
Tom Smith and George Andrews
started 1988 exactly as th ey finished
1987 - chasing each other in the
500cc In term edi at e class. T his race
bore a fam iliar pattern; Smith leading and finishing first and Andrews
in a 'very tigh t second all the way
to both flags.
Dean J ennings got a good start o n
the po ints for 1988 wi th a solid win
in the 250cc Beginner even t. Pat
Ball ard go t the lead and Je nnings
was fourth off the li ne in mota one.
J enn ings work~his way promptly
to 'second at the end of the first la p .
In lap four, he took the lead away
from Ball ard and held it for th e win;
