David Moskovitz survived the conditio ns to finis h second, whi le J erem y Ster~er slit he red hom e next in th ird. RICk Lee foll owed in fourt h a nd T ony Sul ek took fifth . • Clint J ones (52C) leads 125cc Intermediate winner Chris Neal (57 C) in t o the first turn before the rain came. Then the track became a mess; Greg MacArthur (1 5 C) cuts by Jim O'Neal (127) in a 250cc Junior moto. Birdwell flies to win at Hollister mud bath. By Troy Scott HOLLISTER, CA, JAN.J 6 Ty Birdwell slithered to victory in the 125cc J u n io r Division O n e class as the third sportsman round of the CMC/Dodge Truck Golden Sta te Nationals hit H ollister Hills. The Hollister course is usually firm and tacky, but it wa s turn ed into anoth er track wh en a heavy rain began to fall 16 d uring th e program. This, combined with the already waterlogged trac k from ra in th e previous week , made th e co urse nearl y impassabl e, forcing th e races to be called after the fir st mo tos and leaving Birdwell with th e . win. Wh en the gate dropped for th e " first" (a n d onl y) 125cc Jun io r Divi sion One mota th e sun was shining and th e day looked to be promi sin~ when Honda-mounted J a son GIbson g r a bbed th e lea d tra il ed by Damon Kemp, Larry Lawren ce a nd J ohn Culwell. As Gibson, Kemp a nd La wren ce slid a way out front, Cul well lost what little traction th ere was a nd fell. In fact the tra ck go t to be so tough to negotia te that th e lead ers would lose the ir positions j ust go ing down a ny of the stra ights a nd falling. After five la ps of unidentifiabl e, du e to th e mud covered bikes, lead changes it was Birdwell wh o had work ed his way to the front to come up with the win. La wrence managed to pass Kemp durin g th e race and fin ished second, wh il e Kemp maintained third. H onda-mounted Pat Gomm moved into fourth at the fin ish , a nd Culwell recovered from hi s cras h to fini sh fifth . Earl y-leader Gibson fell back to l Oth at the finish . When the ga te fell for th e. second division of 125cc Junior s H ondamounted Scott Bristo l ca me up with the hol esh ot foll o wed by Charlie Flippen , And y Grider, SCOll Ta kacs and Ryan Carlisle. The posi tio ns stayed th at way until nea r th e end of the first lap Grider got ca uget in a ru t a nd 'went down . T a kacs had nowhere to go a nd pl owed into th e back of Grid er, and both were o u t of th e top 10. By the third lap Flippen had passed Bristol and both were way out front with an l l-second lead. They took it to the finish with Flippen pu shing his Kawasaki across th e line first just a head of Bristol. Honda-mounted Troy Dollansky moved into third at the finish followed by Mark Drebert and Carlisle. As th e ra in con tin ued to co me down th e Vet Masters took to th e grid a nd wh en th e ga te fell Yamahamounted Mark White was first to th e front followed by Rob ert Casper , J on Mi ller, John Dall aire and Duane J oice. As th e race progressed Casper was passe d by MIll er a nd the race was on as the two rid ers were back and forth th e ent ire race with neither ri der backing off. By th e end of the mot a White had moved a way and too k th e win while Mill er fin all y took contro l of th e seco nd spot. Dall ai re moved into third as Casp er fell back to fourth a t th e finis h ah ead of Ron Nordstrom. By the time th e third division of I25cc Beginners hit the line th e track was getting unbearable a nd many bikes were seizing up, making th e race the last o ne of th e day. As the pa ck hit th e sloppy terrain J effrey Brownlee took control of the lead. The track was now so sli ck tha t ·the majority of rid ers would spin o ut and fall go ing backw ards as th ey "tried to brake.for some corne rs. At o ne point th ere were as many as 19 rid ers stuc k o n a n u p hill sectio n, and th ose th at fell off near the to p slid back down the hill wh ile th eir bik es stayed stuck in the goop a t th e top.
