Kiser grabbed the holesh ot ag ai n on the restart, and again Shobert passed him within a lap, as did Corsetti. That was it, Shobert was go ne. Corsetti fini shed second an d Kiser had to' sett le for th ird a nd a trip to the Last Cha nce Qualifier. Kiser nabbed the start in th e LCQ and raced with rookie Expert Nu nez for th e fu ll 10 laps. Kiser led all the wa y to th e chec kers, ' but N unez hounded him every inch of the way . Nunez pushed Kiser ha rd on th e fin al lap but cou ld n't ge t by. Sin ce th e top two riders in the LCQ were sla ted for the National , both rid ers transferred to the main event . Wh en th e 12 finalists lined up for the first-ever AMA 600cc Nationa l. the field included nine Expe rts and three Jun io r s (Kelly, Ki ser a n d Tresser). Tresser was fir st off the line in th e 25-lap main event , but by the en d of the first lap he had been dropped to fourth by new leader Day. seco nd pl ace Wilson and Carr . who was ru nning th ird. Shober t came off the 'line in fifth, f ollowed by Eklund. .Hames a nd Kell y. Wil son slipped off the pace on the next lap , allowing Carr to take over second and Tresser to move into third. Wi lson fell to fourth. wi th Shobert and com pa ny riding on hi s rear fender. Little cha nged until lap n in e when Carr went down in turn twd'and took . Tresser wi th him . " I hit a rut in that corner and the back end came around and sh oved me into the ha y bal es," sa id Carr. " It ha ppen ed so fast, I cou ldn 't react. And y ran into th e back .of me." " I was just trying to work Chris, find his lines, when he fell in front of me.... said H arl ey-mounted Tresser. The in cident allowed several rid ers to move thro ug h th e pack, ' a nd at the halfway pomt Day led Shobert . Eklu nd, Hames, Kell y, Kiser and J ones. In the final 10 laps. Shob ert a nd Eklund reeled in th e tiring Day. and. on lap 24 they both powered around th e leader at almost the sa me instant in tu rn th ree. H a rl e y-m o u n ted Eklu nd went by o n th e o utside, a nd Shobert do ve his factory H o nda und ern ea th Da y a n the ins ide. Shobert took the chec kers in first. Ek lund fini sh ed a close second and, after leading most of the race, Day had to settle for the show position. H am es ca me h o m e in fourth , follo wed by Kell y, Kiser , Jones, Wilson. Carr . Tresser, Nunez a nd Co rsetti. "W it h all the ruts and bumps in the race track, I didn 't thi nk most of to night's racing wa s all that competitive," said Ek lund. " Everybody had to race on one line. Bu t in the main even t I th in k me. Bubba and Keith Day put on a heck of a show." " T he last cou ple of laps I was just po le-pu tti ng away," said Eklund. " T hen I went o ut hi gh to see how that line, wo rked a n d it worked great. " " Go ing over th e bu mps was ki lling me," said Day.
