Keith Johnson scored t he overall victory in the Open Pro class with 2-1 f inis hes. Jon McCabe was second overall. Jeff Frisz (3 8) led Hannah in the ear ly laps of the first 250cc Pro moto. Hannah passed him on lap six . then won moto two for the ove ra ll victory. Gene Naumec (115) sco red w ins in the 125 and 250cc B as well as the 125 (12-15) classes. Here he chases Mark Peterson in 250cc B action. M ike Deck (19 ) and Patric k Greer (1) flank 65cc class w inner Kenny .Yo ho at t he start of the 85 (7- 1 1) race . Yoho finished th ird in that class. 10 overa ll, " I needed to beat Kitsch or Bowen would win it. I fell , but th e radio told me what I wanted to hear. Kitsch was not close enough." Florida's Glen Lofley came out of retirement to lead both 500cc motos. In moto one Richard Sirois, Mik e Spear, Chuck Weinberg and Johnson separated Kell er from th e win. Keller's powerful styIe ate up th e track and he jumped Lofley for the win on lap nine. David McClean followed Keller through the ranks for second. McClean said, " I knew JoJo would tire , but m y goggles were full of sweat and sand and I co uldn 't see." Keller said, " It is good to be back at the Winter AMA. Last week I had to deal wi th a lot of frozen pi pes. Bettencourt is giving me th e bikes and H onda West of Tampa is helpin g with m y expen ses ." . Mota two featured Lof ley, Sp ear, Jim Kapitan, Jon McCabe, and Weinberg in th e chase. Johnson needed two laps to roost by Lofl ey and claim th e moto. Keller moved up from 10th to third beh ind McCabe, but a first moto wrist injury for ced him o ut on lap I I. McLean said later, " I go t a bad start and th en grabbed all my tear offs at on ce. Amateur T eam Green Kawa sak i/Scott USA / DMC -spo n sored Gene Naumec scored the on ly triple wi n in recen t series history wi th a sweep of th e I25cc B, 250cc B and 125cc You th classes. Na umec said smi li ng, "T he hardest pa rt was th e first rna to. I was stiff in the cold weather and fou nd it hard to get going." J eff Beckington had quite a day in th e Expert ranks. The LaRocco Cycle/ Gear / Honda-s po nso red rider aced hi s bro th er David to the 125cc w i n a nd fin i sh ed th ird to J on McCabe and J ohn Kitsch in 250cc compe titio n. Beckington said, before flying back to Michigan for exams; " O ther than a loose ~ri p in th e fin al 125cc moto, everything was perfect o ut th ere for me today ." McCabe had a battle with J ohn Kit schbe£ore wrapping up hi s second 250cc A win. He exp lained, " I didn 't feel that good toda y and was surprised that I won. Getting two good starts was th e key." In 500cc A action Mik e Stahlman ca ug h t J oe Rogers to win the first mota, then battled back for a fourth behind Keith J ohnson, Mike Ro th , a nd Brad Bolton to claim the overall w in. The Yam aha /JT/Kal-Gard supported rid er said; "I drew 33 on th e gate in th e first moto and J oe Rogers was hard to catch." In the Mini division Kenn y Yoho sp lit 65cc motos with series leader Scott Julien . T on y Ha ynes, riding for Cycle Springs Yamaha, churn ed to his first 85cc (7-11 ) win and Brian Swink romped to another 85cc (1215) class victory. Four more motos of 25 Plus and Senior class actio n belonged to VPE I Boyesen-backed Fred Vertucci. The retired pro still rid es with enthusiasm and a lot of flair. Super Senior Kenny Brown returned to the win colum n in a good . duel with AI Gardner and Thomas Bragg.
