Canada Set the record straight Champions All by Alex H odgkinson in the J anuary 6 issue claims that Jim Pomeroy didn 't win th e Spanish GP in 1973. On the day of the race. J im w as awarded second pl a ce. Ho wever. the follow ing day he was declared th e o vera ll w inner. As Hodgkinson reports elsewhere in h is own article, in 1973 the FIM changed the scori ng based on mo to pl acings rather than overall and crea ted the conf usion. At the next GP Jim was acknowledged as the points leader and held first pl ace until afte r the thi rd GP of the seaso n. A littl e known fact is that J im wasn 't u nder co ntract wh en he won that G P. His expenses had been paid to Sp ain but he was gi ven a stock bike. J im changed the bars. grips and tires and went racing. Need less to say, he was given a co ntract later, but he was a privateer at th e time . Also, if th at 's Roger DeCoster and hi s CZ on th e cover of that same issue. you ca n see wh y Jofas stopped more than rocks. The J ofa also sto pped a lo t of teasing Roger took because of the fu n ny faces he made when he raced. Ask him abo ut it.
