Set the record straight
Champions All by Alex H odgkinson in the J anuary 6 issue claims that
Jim Pomeroy didn 't win th e Spanish
GP in 1973. On the day of the race.
J im w as awarded second pl a ce.
Ho wever. the follow ing day he was
declared th e o vera ll w inner. As
Hodgkinson reports elsewhere in h is
own article, in 1973 the FIM changed
the scori ng based on mo to pl acings
rather than overall and crea ted the
conf usion. At the next GP Jim was
acknowledged as the points leader
and held first pl ace until afte r the
thi rd GP of the seaso n.
A littl e known fact is that J im
wasn 't u nder co ntract wh en he won
that G P. His expenses had been paid
to Sp ain but he was gi ven a stock
bike. J im changed the bars. grips and
tires and went racing. Need less to
say, he was given a co ntract later,
but he was a privateer at th e time .
Also, if th at 's Roger DeCoster and
hi s CZ on th e cover of that same issue.
you ca n see wh y Jofas stopped more
than rocks. The J ofa also sto pped a
lo t of teasing Roger took because of
the fu n ny faces he made when he
raced. Ask him abo ut it.
Fin all y, J im achieved a number of
not abl e firsts in his career. a list of
whi ch will be provided on req uest
and o n the co nd itio n it wi ll be
published in Cycle N ews. It's time
to set the record stra ig ht.
