First in the 250cc class was Greg Zitterkopf (Hon) at fifth overall. while 250cc runnerup honors went to Carlos Serrano (Va m ). Ed Arnet (Ho n ) was first in the 125cc class (seventh overall ). fo llowed by Fritz Kadlec (Kaw) and Jeff Fredette (Kaw). Jo Jo Keller (Hon) turned in 2-1 moto performa nces to score the overa ll win in the 500cc Pro class at the J anuary 17 round of the Florida Winter AMA MX Series at Diamondback Raceway in Cocoa. Jon McCabe (Hon) was second overall wit h a 12 day whi le th ird went to J i m Kapitan (Hon) who posted a 5-3. Bob Hannah (Suz) was the overall winner in the 250cc Pro class. Hannah's 2I topped the 1-2 of runner-up Mike La Rocco (Yam). Jo h n Reinho lt (Suz) was third overall with a 3-3 tally. The overall win in the 125cc Pro class 'went to J ay Mann (Kaw) who finished 3-2. Keith Bowen (Kaw) was second with an 8-1 score while third went to Keith T urpin (Suz) who logged 2-5 finishes. LaRocco won the first 125cc Pro moto but a DNF in the second moto dropped him to nint h overa ll. The amateur support motos saw John Kitch (Kaw) top both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes and Mike Stahlman (Yam) turn in a perfect 1-1 score to top the Open A class. . Dan Smith (Hus} came from behind to capture the overall victory at the Gold Strike (formerly Whiskey Pete's) Hare & Hound in Stateline. Nevada. January 16. Finishing 18 seconds should be finalized in the next couple of weeks, according to Race Team Manager and former Grand National Champion Gary Scott. KK's 1988 race program, which is "99 perce nt complete," will be simi lar to the '87 program, Scott said. It will include payback to riders in certain AMA/ Grand National Dirt Track races, specified 600cc National Dirt Track events (including contingency payments to the top KK Junior in the 600cc series), and certain AMA/ Camel Pro Series superbike road races. Most of the races selected for the program will be in the Midwest , which is KK's marketing area . Riders participating in the program must ride with the KK logo on their chests and meet other contingency program requirements. Road Racer Dan Chivington, the 1987 KK Champion, pocketed $12,000 from last year's program, according to Scott. "And the program should be at least as good as last year," Scott added. Comp lete details, including amounts of contingency awards and a KK race schedule, will be released soon. A l O-race Yamaha YSR50 Championship Series will kick off on March 20 at Car lsbad Raceway in Car lsbad, California. The series will run at Carlsbad and Willow Springs Raceway (also in southern California) and feature classes for stock and modified bikes and beginner to expert riders. Loca l Yamaha dealers have donated a 1988 YSR50 to be given away. Cash will be up for grabs for the pros and prizes from sponsors ' Acerbis, Goodyear, Targa, Toomey Racing, White Bros., Motul Oil, Dunlop, Aloe Up, Factory Outlet and Kinetic Research will be available to other racers. According to O 'Donnell's father, Mike, Doug compressed his 12th vertabrae and bruised his spinal cord , but he does have feeling and some movement in both his legs. Malherbe broke his neck in a motorcycle crash during the Paris-to-Dakar rally ' two weeks ago, and according to Arnold, Mal herbe still has no feeling below his neck. (SXI) h ad chosen not to promote . the scheduled February 20 supercross race in San Diego California's Jack Murphy Stadium, and that several other promoters were bidd ing for the date. Due to the Martin Luther King Jr., holiday, howev er, Cycle News was unab le to reach anyone at SXI or Jack Murphy Stadium who could confirm or deny the rumors. We did manage to reach AMA Vice President of Professional Competition Bill Amick, but he could shed little light on the matter. " I can 't confirm anything," Amick said. " We' ve heard there are negotiations going on among promoters for ownership of the date, but we haven't talked to the stadium. T he stadium has said that on February 20 someone will do a supercross in San Diego stadium. "At this point, that event is no t AMA-sanctioned," added Amick. " SXI had applied for a sanction, but they haven't met all the conditions." Rumors also were flying at press time that the San Diego stadium race wou ld be promoted by Micke y Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG) and would feature the same supercross/Ultracross format to be offered by Mickey Thompson at the upcoming January 30 Super Crown of Motocross race in Anaheim (California) Stadium , but Thompson refused to confirm or deny those rumors. " I ca n ' t say anything," said Thomp'son when asked about the possibility of his company promoting the San Diego event.
