The Gearl Spectro/S mith / Dirt Digits-backed Jones ope ned th e action on Saturday wi th a co me -from- beh m d wm over Brian Carroll a nd Dav ey Coombs. In Sunday 's finale Coen took advantag~ of a late sli p by J ones to hand SUZU ~I it's first World Sports Arenacross wm o f t he winter sea son. Sa tu rday's racing got underway with qualifying rounds th at would n ar ro w th e field to 12 rid ers for the m ain. The Honda pilot was ab le to o u tgu n Coen,: Carroll and Bell ora for th e lead spot. H eat three was won by Coombs with McMillen less th an a bike length behind. Eric Chavira won th e 80cc NOVice class after lead in g from start to Fi nis h a t th e Ca lifornia Racing Club's New Year's Grand Pri x at Perris Raceway. Chavira, aboard a Valley H onda , grabbed th e holeshot followed by Yamaha- mounted ' T ony Am aradio a nd Kelly Poor. Cha vira a n d Amaradi o bepn to pull awa y from Poor. Arnaradio co ntin ued.to close on th e lead Honda of Chavira , but ti me ran out wi th C havira ta king th e overa ll win. Poor followed th e- pair in th e third overall position. Wh en th e flag dropped for th e Women 's Ex pert clas s th e JSawas~ki o f Mindy Sm ith was the fir st bike off the lin e a nd into the first co rner leadi ng Tam i Ri ce and Bo nni e "Warch , both o n Suzukis. In th e Expert class things began h appening to the front run.n~rs. First Smith missed a corn er, giving th e lead to Rice and moving Warch to second. Then Ri ce blew a sh ift a t th e top of the esses giving Sm ith, who h ad ch a rge d b ack up into seco n d, back the lead. Smith started to pull a way at this point an d was th e o n ly rider to co ntin ua ll y clear a small set of double jumps, which hel ped build a b ig cushion on Ri ce. S m i th went uncontested to th e fin ish, follow ed by Rice and Warc~. In the N ovice ranks Mel ani e Parkes chalked up her fir st win. o f th e year with J anet Mathew s ta~ng seco nd and Susan Green ro u n dmg o u t the top th ree slots. In th e Vet Beginner class Gus Zielke led from start to fini sh to m ake h is first Vet rid e a very successfu l one. H e backed this up by ta king anoth er wi n in th e 125cc Beginner class. Da vid P ri chard and Phil Dav y ro u nded out th e top three p ositions in th e Vet class. In th e Vet No vice action Richard Wh itaker led KTM-m ounted Monte P ri chett, Russell Long an d Phil Ga llagh er around th e m~ tocro s s section of th e track. In th e Heavyweight Su perbi ke ra ce H opperstad had th e. hol eshot with Kell y Byrd , Dal e Kieffer and Mike Williams in tow. H opperstad led th e firs t eigh t laps but Byrd dove p ast to lead lap nine as th ey pulled away from Kieffer. Byrd upped the pace o nce o ut front a nd tu rned a str i ng of 1:09s but Hopper stad wouldn 't let go and outbraked Byrd in turn o ne to tak e th e lead. Byrd repassed in tu rn two, only to have H oppers tad reta ke the lead with .an o u tside turn three pass . Byrd tried to repass but Hopperstad was.pI~ch" in ghis Yamaha-hard into the lI~fl~ld esses and held his lead to the finish line. Kye Gunn had th e holeshot in the co m b ined U nli m ited and Heavyweight GP class, but Byrd overtook Gunn 's 1100 and led Gunn, Kieffer and Hopperstad into turn one. Byrd led Gunn by three seconds on lap two as Hopperstad passed Kieffer and then Gunn on th e n ext lap. Hopperstad closed in on Byrd on the next lap a nd took the lead when Byrd m issed turn ei gh t an d went off th e tr a ck . Byrd re-entered the track , p assed Hopperstad and led the next lap but H opperstad ou t-powered hi~ down th e straight to retake th e lead. Byrd 's ignition system wa s ac tin g up a nd as th e ra ce wore down to the cl o sing laps, Hopperstad pulled farther a nd farther ahead, fin ally finishing two seco nds ahead o f Byrd on his Jolly Ranch~r/Rock Oil/Boulder Yamaha/Shoei/Bates/ Avon-backed FZR.
