with a 3-2 moto score. Keith Bowen (Kaw ), who logged 5-1 finishes, was second overall. Bob Hannah (Suz) won both motos in the 250cc Pro class to take the overall win over runner-up Mike Lakocco (Yam ) who finished 3-2. Keith Johnson (Kaw) took the overall win In the 500cc Pro class with a 3-1 day. Jon McCabe (Hon) was second overall with a 52 tally. McCabe won the 250cc A class . which was run on Saturday. Three-time 500cc MX Worl d Champion Andre Malherbe suffered serious spinal injuries in a crash during the six th leg of the 22-day Paris-Alger-Dakar Rally, January 6. According to fello w Belgian and fivetime 500cc World Cha mpion Roger DeCoster, Malherbe, who was riding a Yamaha, was in a high-speed sand dune section in the Sahara Desert in Algeria, heading towards the town of Tamanrasset, when he came over a rise and hit a di tch, sending him into an end-over-end crash. "His motorcycle hit him in the back and broke one of the cervical verteb rae in his neck; he never los t consciousness," said DeCoster. "He's in a Paris (France) hospital and is paralyzed from the neck down. He has no movement in his hands or arms, but " " he can talk. He has been operated on, and his chances of a full recovery aren't good - one in a million." Three-time World Champ ion Ke nny Roberts and th ree-time " AMA Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert recently f lunked , the Ricky Johnson Supercross School. As it turns out, Johnson visited Roberts at his ranch in northern Cal ifornia recently and discovered a rather difficult double jump. After seeing the fourtime National Champion motocrosser clear the second level of the j um p. Roberts and Shobert decided to give it a shot. Despite Johnson's words of warning ("I was scared they were going to " hurt t h em selv es" ). both went ahead w ith their attempts. Shobert narrowly cleared the jump as did Roberts. with the latter smashing his nose against the handlebars upon landi ng . Later in the week. Shobert tried the jump aga in. "came up a little short" and c rashed, sprain ing his wrist. Roberts. meanwhile. now claims that he flies farther off t he j um p "t han Johnson. adding that the -m o t c c rc sser had better come back up to meet the challenge. Shobert says he will be fit in a few weeks. Dirt tracker Ted Taylor 'reportedly will miss the first few weeks of the 1988 AMA Grand National Championship Dirt Track Series/Camel Pro Senes schedule due to an offseason riding accident which left him with five broken bones in his left foot. Taylor was cowtrailing near his Arbuckle, California, home when he crashed and ran a fence post through his foot. The sophomore Expert is recupera ting at home. Australia. 2 The January 9-10 Florida Wimer AMA MX Series round at Dade City saw Todd Deh oop (Suz) score the overall win in the 125cc Pro class Several professional motocross superstars from days gone by will be on hand for Mickey Thompson's January 30 Super Crown of Stadium Motocross in Anaheim (California) Stadium . The list includes Roger Decoster. Marty Tripes. Tom Wh ite. John Savitski. . Warren "R eid . Rich Eirstedt. Tommy Croft. Marty Smith. Mike Bell. Preston Petty. Dan White. " Feets" Minert. and Bob Maynard . Jim Pomeroy (the first American rider to ever win a Grand Prix moto), will be on hand despite being on the mend f rom a recent automobile accident. "Rocket" Rex " Staten. another rider recuperating from injuries " (suffered in the Glen Helen round of the Golden State MX Series in California). also will be on hand. The veteran riders will be in t he "Fun Zone" (enter at Gate 10) beg inning at 2 :00 p.m. Ten to 15 classic, show " quality, vintage motorcycles will be on display at the January 30 stadium motocross in Anaheim Stadium, according to Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group. Machines for the exhibition will be provided by the California Vintage Racing Group and the Southern Ca lifornia cz. Club. The display will be open to the public at 2:00 p.m. in the " Fu n Zone " and manufacturers' display area (gate 10). There has been some shuffling of the organizational chart at U.S . Suzuki. Company President Masao Tani announced January 4 that Mark Blackwell. formerly national advertising manager. has been appointed director of the marketing division. Blackwell will oversee the sales. marketing. communications (advertising and public relations). accessory and retail promotions departments. District Sales Manager Bob Starr has been named advertising manager. and former motojournalist Joe Colombero is the new press relat io n s manager. Colombero will replace Rob Sanders. who is scheduled to leave Suzuki at the end of January. Du n lo p Tires, EBC Brakes, KalGard lubricants and Kushitani leathers have added more than $127,000 to U.S. Suzuki 's 1988 road race contingency program for the Suzuki National Cup Series, pushing con tingency awards for the series to more than $500,000. Riders mounted on Suzuki motorcycles who use products made by these "associate sponsors" will be eligible for cash prizes in all Suzuki-posted events in the 600, 750 and llOOcc classes. For riders to be eligible for contingency money from associate sponsors, at least three logos for each sponsor much be clearly displayed, one on each side of the motorcycle and one on the winds hield (competitive product logos cannot be visible). O n ly Suzuki-mounted riders are eligible for the contingency money and only from associate sponsors whose logos are displayed proe
