Bell blasts to win at Salem AX By Clay Light SALEM; OR, JAN. 2 Mike Bell won the 125cc Pro/Inter- . mediate class at Salem's JackmanLong Expo Arena during Motocross Northwest sanctioned a re n a cro ss. Bell came from behind in th e second moto to take a I-I sweep of the class aboard the Portl and H onda sponsored CRI25. Bell , intermediate Ed J ensen and fellow pro Keith Foidel held down th e top three positions on th e open ing lap of co m peti tio n in th e firs t moto. Adam . West came through traffic after a first tum pileup as did Team Green 's Jeff Dail y. We st nabbed Foidel and set o u t after Jensen, but came up short in the moto. Bell took the win by four seconds, beating a surprisingly fast Jensen, West Foidel and Daily a t the finish. Moto two was by far th e even ing 's best race. Foidel grabbed th e lead at the drop of the gate with J ensen holding down second while Bell was stuck in mid-pack. By the third lap Jensen and Foidel had pulled away from a sensational Bell /Kyle Brooks/Daily swapfest. Bell quickly displaced the Intermediate duo and set his sights on Jensen overtaking him on the fourth lap and setting out after Foidel. Foidel rode smooth and precise but Bell picked him off and soundly proceeded to sail away in search of . the checkered flag. Foidel held on to finish second whil e Dail y, who mounted an incredible charge with two laps to go, took Jensen 's lead and the Intermediate win. Jensen, Brooks, Kip Mast and Suzukimounted Jason Nichols filled the top seven at moto's end. Richard Postma won rnoto one o f the first 125cc Beginner division, but crashed in the second contest, handing the lead over to Honda-mounted . Darren Strunk. Strunk's 3-1 performances were good for the overall win, beating Rob Bross' 2-3 finishes and Postma's. ~-4 rides. . Chris Houdek dominated both division two motos and took wins over Eri c Cummings in both contests in the 10 rider field. But that's where co nsista ncy ended. Tom Warberg took third.in moto one and 10th in the second round while Trever Levitt took third in moto two but DNF moto one. That put Jeff Phillips into third overall. Kevin Yeager took the 250cc Junior class win via 2-2 postings, edging Rick Roberts' 1-3 performances. 125 PRO/INT: 1. Mike Bell (Hon); 2. Keith Foidel (Hon); 3. Ed Jensen (Hon); 4 . Veeder victorious in Harrisburg STs By Len Breech HARRISBURG, PA, DEC. 17-18 Duane Veeder left with th e lion's sh are of th e purse when he totally dominated the Expert races in both da ys of short track competition at the Trail-Way Speedway-sponsored 10th Annu al Moto-Rama , held in Harrisburg. Veeder topped th e 250 a nd 600cc Expert final s both da ys , Ricky Winsett easily won th e 55cc class both nights , and Joe Heberling topped the Seniors both nights. Veeder 's closest race of the series was the 250cc Expert final on Thursday night. Veeder had the fastest lines on the rough track with National co m p e ti to r Rodney Farris close behind him from the fourth lap on: Mike Klopp took the holeshot, but Veeder passed Klopp as they began the third lap, and Farris went by the following lap. While Farris closed to within two lengths of th e leader , Klopp got into a heated battle with Mike Varnes and Georgie Price over third. Veeder powered his Roosevelt Chevy /Olds-Coons Cam 2Christman 's Honda-Cycle DyneFairway Oil-sponsored Honda across the finish line two lengths ahead of Farris. Veeder's win in the 600cc final was fairly easy. Veeder quickly jumped in front, while Mickey Rusden held se co n d over Lew Woods, Scott Saunders and Kenny Mohler. Saunders took second on the sixth lap, with the others in close pursuit. With mo st of this year's top amateurs moving up to the Expert class, the Amateur divisions were wide open, and Eddie Hidden and Jim Lynch took their first wins in the 250 and 600cc Amateur classes, respectively. Hidden grabbed the lead from Mike Rabold, Dave Gamble and Merv Sensenig when the 250cc Amateurs exited turn two at the start of the final. Rabold stayed close to Hidden and the duo pulled away from the field before Rabold dropped out of th e race at the halfway point. Hidden won by a large margin. Johnny Bowers nabbed the holeshot in the 600cc Amateur class with Steve Smith Sr. , Lynch ' and Walt Bowker following. With the race pretty much in hand, Bowersstalled his Yamaha on lap three, gIVing the lead to Smith. Smith held the point position until Lynch slipped under him in tum one with two laps to go. Veeter again took the 250 and 600cc Expert finals on Friday. The 250cc' Experts had trouble staying upright on the smooth track surface. It took at least three starts before they got uriderway. Throughout it all, Veeder managed to keep away from th e ever-gr owin g pena.lty line, and took the lead from Mike Varnes, Robert Weiss and Paul Crumling. Crumling took third on the second lap. With riders still falling. th e ra ce was called a couple of laps past th e halfway point as the first turn crashes continued. Veeder had an easy time in the 600cc Expert final , grabbing the lead from Richard Foard, Mickey Rusden and Kenny Mohler . Foard bobbled coming out of the second tum on the fourth lap, giving Rusden second; Rusden was running almost a straightaway behind Veeder. In the 600cc Amateur final Gary Foard and Lynch pulled away from Steve Smith Sr. and Walt Bowker in a close battle for the win that went to Foard by a length. It looked like a Foard triple for parts of the Senior1750cc Expert final as Gary' s older brother, Richard, battled for the lead. Joe Heberling took the lead from Foard, Nick Taylor and Mickey Rusden. Rusden moved up to second and briefly took the lead around halfway, only to drop out later. When Rusden .dro p ped out, Foard moved up to challenge Heberling, but came up a length short. Results THURSDAV 55: 1. Ricky Winsen (Yam); 2. John Winsett (Yam); 3. Paul Lynch (Yam); 4.
