Howerton hauls in Hidden Valley HS By Tom Tysl SAN ANTONIO, TX, D EC. 13 Hidden Valley Recrea tio n P ar k in San Antonio played hostto the final round of the Sou th Texas H are Scramble Series, where Kent Howerton dominated the Pro class. The 5.2-mile track circling Hidden Valley included an o ld motocross track, a water crossing or two, and enough elevation changes to keep a moun tain goat happy. At th e green flag 12 Pro riders charged toward the first turn at the top of a 150-foo t h ill. Cresting the hill first were Doug Paley and Keith' Simmons in a dead heat, with Howerton stuck halfway up the h ill, sandwiched between two other riders. Pu lling a quick "180" down the hill and taking another lin e up, Howerton put himself behind the pack and had the whole race to make it up. It took Howerton just one lap to make up for that terrible start. Ridi n g a CR250 Honda, Howerton had the lead when riders passed through the scoring barrels, followed by Todd Harris, Keith Simmons, Doug Palye, Jon Bennett and Pete Sullivan. Howerton had 16 seconds on Harris at th e ' en d of lap two and almost 30 seconds at the start of lap three. On lap five, however, Harris moved past Howerton and had a Illsecond advantage when the duo entered th e pi ts. Behind th e leaders the action continued as KX500-mounted Steve Cardwell moved toward the front after a bad start. By lap five, he moved into sixth behind Charlie Martin. On the ninth lap Howerton was back in front and had a 50-second lead on Harris, who had two minutes on Simmons ; Cardwell was 10 seconds behind Simmons. Howerton, smooth and consistent, had almost four minutes on H arr is at the checkered flag , with Cardwell
