Mike Healey (17) leads 125cc Pro winner M ike Kiedrowski on 't he way to winning the first moto. Kiedrowski led the way in moto two. Mat iasevich to easily ta ke third, Manl ey was fifth and Ryan hel d o ff Winn in the closing laps to claim six th . . " It seemed like he (Healey) got th rough the la ppers faster th a n I did," said Kied ro wski , " a nd h e was th e firs t one, so I though t that th ey'd m ove over for m e b u t instead they tried to race him so I go t st uck behi nd th em." . Cagiva rider Sco tt Bro wn b lasted into first a t th e start of mota two foll owed by Heal ey, Kied row ski an d Ryan. R ya n went to th e o uts ide of turn th ree a n d took third , bu t Kiedro wski fough t back la ter in th e lap a nd repassed h im . Near the en d of th e openi ng la p H eal ey su dde n ly dropped fro m seco nd to fo u rth , but on the nex t la p h e was up a p osition behind Ryan a n d Kied rowski. On lap th ree H eal ey was back to seco n d , but by now Kiedro wski had buil t up a lead . . Sm ith was close to H eal ey a nd a few seco nds 'ah ead o f Pascarella. wh ile R ya n fell back to fifth . By mid-mo to Kiedrowski had put eig h t seco n ds ' o n H eal ey, whil e furth er back Lowell T homson was on th e m ove an d into fifth. Although Smi th was push in g h ard from beh ind, Heal ey co u ld do n o thing to close th e gap on Kiedrow ski. On the last few laps Smith began to back off, a nd H eal ey let up hIS pace si nce Kied row ski was untou ch able. Pa scarelIa held o n to fo urt h over T homson, and R yan fou ght o ff Lewis through out th e fin al cir cu it for sixth a t th e finish line. "T he front en d swa pped a nd I h it my chest o n the bars wh ich knocked th e wind ou t o f me," said Heal ey. " I dropped wa y back a nd had to work up again an d once I got back into second it was j ust too ha rd -to ca tch him (Kiedrowski). We were both going th e same spee d an d th e track was rea l ro ugh so I j us t fig ured th at seco nd was as good as first. " " I got out arou n d th ird place," said Kiedrowski a fterwards, " th en a co uple people fell an d I got aro u nd H eal ey w he n he swapped a little bit an d got arou n d him an d sta rte d pull in g a way an d rode . my ow n race." As th e first 500cc Pro m ot a left th e lin e Will y Sim ons shot .ou t into first foll ow ed by Doug O 'D onnell , Tyson Voh la nd, Mervyn Ans tie, Leisk an d BilIy Frank.. Leisk q u ickly moved to third on. the first lap an d a t th e beginning o f lap two th e top th ree of Simons, O 'D onnell an d Leisk were all ver y close. Fran k moved to ' fourth, Wat ts took over fifth a n d Breker was seventh behind Voh la nd. On the third lap both O 'D onnell an d Lei sk got by Simons a t ab out the same tim e, and short ly af terwards Leisk go t by O 'D onnell to take th e lead. Simons was fad in g fast as Fran k a nd Vohland were th e next riders to go by on th e n ext lap. Once out fro nt Leisk began to pull away an d by the halfway poi n t had built a good -sized lead. Frank h eld second wh ile Vohland a n d Watts exchanged th ir d severa l times. T he last h alf of th e race was a ll Le isk as he cr u ised a u t front a nd took th e win with pl enty of d istance o n Frank. Vohland an d Watts were still battling over third, an d on th e last hip Wa tts was able to stay in front to th e fini sh. Breker was fifth a nd Simons m anaged to hang on to sixth -. " My ar ms rea lIy p u mped u p so I co u ld h ardl y h ang o n so I decided to slow down because the track is' really fas t," said Simons o f h is firs tm o to demise. Brek er bl asted into th e lead a t th e sta rt of th e seco nd mota with Leis k, Frank, Tim McClintock and Kell y An dris in tow. Breker 's lead lasted fo r a lap before he was passed by Leisk, and Wa tts was on th e move as h e cl imbed up to th e fou rt h spot by the seco n d lap. Frank was the n ex t. to ge t .by Breker , who felI to sixth on lap four, but Fra n k soon dro pped ou t of th e race wh en h is Yam aha seized. Once again Leisk mov ed .o u t Jeff Leisk fought off fatigue and Goat Brekerlate in the second moto to claim the 500cc Pro win; he was fifth overall in the 250cc Pro class. . to a good lead , but a t m id-rnot o his d ista n ce ori Watts sudde n ly began shri n king. Breker was back o n th e 'gas a fter h e cras he d and moved back into th ird ahead o f Andris, McClin tock , O 'D onnell a nd Gordon Ward, 'w ho was rapidly mov ing up a fter b eing in vol ved in a first-turn crash. On lap-ei~ht Lei sk had his lead cu t to n othing by Watts as th ey entered la p ped traffi c. A lap la ter Wa tt s took th e lea d an d quickl y began to pull away as Leisk began to slo w. Ward work ed by O 'D onnelI a nd closed in on An dr is. With two laps remaining Breker began to catch th e fadin ~ Leisk and p u lle d ri ght in beh in d h im o n the fin al go -aro u nd bu t was u nable to ge t by: Ward p a ssed Andris, an d th e finishin g order was set. Watts took th e win , Leisk barel y h u ng on for seco nd over Breker, a nd Ward charged home fourth ahead of Andris and O 'D onn ell. L ei sk clai med th e o vera ll · victo ry with h is I-2 sco re, beat ing Watts' 3-1 fini shes. Breker was third overall, and Wa rd claimed fourth via 7-4 talI ies. . " It was tough," said Leisk when th e racing en ded . " I ro de two classes, and in th e last 500 mota I was prett y tir ed . Tom my came up beh in d m e an d got by. I was tired an d th e track was rea l ro ugh so I just wa nted 10 try a nd not cras h and try to win. " I hung tough , I g uess ," sa id Watts, " a nd I was ge tti ng rea lly tired b ut I g uess th at Lei sk go t a little bi t m ore tired a nd I was able to h ang o n a n d keep p us h ing it. I kep t charging hard a t th e same pace as when I was tryin g to ca tch h im." " I swa p ped a nd h it a tractor tire a nd cra shed ," Breker said. " I got back u p an d was m ad so I went for it. I ca n go faster th an I was th ere, bu t a ll day .l j us t co u ld n' t ge t a nyth ing go in g. My bike didn 't work very good. I had a co u p le of bad shocks, bu t next weekend I'm go ing to win. " In Ve t P ro raci n g Ken Zahrt claimed th e averaII victo ry whe n he passed La rry Roeseler lat e in th e seco n d mota for th e win. Both rider s tied on points, b ut Zahrt' s win, co m bined wi th a fifth in m ot a on e, ga ve h im th e edge . Roeseler' s 4-2 score wa s good for .seco n d overa lI, and Mik e Preston look th ird with 33 fin ishes . First-m ot a wi n ner Rex Sta ten didn 't start th e seco nd ro u nd after a 'cras h in the 500cc Pro ra ce ended hi s da y.
