Jeremy McGrath (1 2 5) held off Phil Lawrence in both 125cc Intermediate motos to claim the overall victory at Barona Oaks, McGrath hot at Multi-National MX By Ken Faught RAMONA, CA, DEC. 13 Jerem y McGrath rode four perfect motos to win the 125 and 250cc Intermediate cla sses at the CMC Multi-Nationals at 12 Barona Oak s. Sharing th e program wi th th e regular CMC classes were the Women 's, Vet a nd Four-Stroke Nati onal s. . Mercedes G onzal ez o nce aga in clea ned u p th e Women 's Expen class with I-I finish es. Vicky J ackson followed Gonzalez hom e in both motos to cla im second overa ll ahea d of She ryl Federow, wh o cla imed third overall wi th 3-4 scores . In Vet actio n Ron Turner posted per fect scores to cla im the overa ll wi n m the Pro class . Vincent DeLuca was seco nd and David Fish er scored thi rd overall. The stan of the first l25cc Intermedi ate race saw R yan Hughes pilot hi s Yam aha to an early lead over Phil Lawren ce, McG rath , Darren Sanford , a nd Chris Fan zo. By th e second ' la p th e to p th ree positi ons had reversed with McGrath now leading Law rence, Hugh es, a nd Mike Ch amberlain . Lap ped riders soo n blocked McGrath allowing Lawren ce to tak e th e lead. Ho wever , a lap lat er La wren ce misse d a shi ft wh ich returned McG ra th to firs t. As th e race progressed McG rath slow ly started to p u ll awa y fro m La wren ce, wh o already had a huge lead over Hu!?hes. McG ra th took the moto win with a two second cush ion over Law rence, Hugh es, Chamberlai n, and La nce Barn ett. McGra th gated pe rfectly in the seco nd moro to lead Hugh es, Ba rnett, a nd Cha mberla in. Lawrence was back in fifth p lace after a poor stan. Within a few laps La wren ce was in second, ahea d of Chamberl ain a n d Barn ett and ga i n ing o n McGra th. Mid way through the race Lawrence had ca ugh t McG rath and was now in str iking di stance. The two rid ers battled for severa l laps with McGrath never losing th e lead. McGra th took a narrow victory over Lawren ce, Ch amb erlain, Barnett and Fanzo. In th e fir st 250cc Intermedi ate rnoto McGrath pulled an' awesome ho lesh ot to lead J ohn McGinnis, Todd Mit ch ell a nd Ian Merrian. As McGrath began to expand his lead, · Mit ch ell passed McGinnis and began to pu ll away. Entering th e ljalfway point of the race, McGinnis dropped to fifth after being pa ssed by Merrian and Mike Caner, wh o turned o n the th rottl e a nd pas sed Merrian and began to pressure Mit chell. On the eighth lap Mit ch ell went down in a turn , handin g Cart er seco n d. Mitch ell quickl y got up in th ird after losin g on ly o ne positi on . McGrath too k the mota win with a IS-second lead over Caner, Mit ch ell , Merrian a nd Ed Murrey. To nobod y's surp rise McGrath hol esh ot Mitchell , La nce Barnett, Mu rrey a nd Jim Ha wki ns in th e second moto, McG rath immedia tely sta rted p u lling away , leavin g more tha n a do zen riders fa r behind. As th e pack ca me around for th e fourth la p , positi ons cha nge d as Barnett pulled off th e track. McG rath was a clea r first leading Mit ch ell , Murrey, J on Levey a nd H awkin s. McGrath soo n saw h is cha nces of a n overa ll victor y nearl y come to a n end as he a nd 250cc Pro rider Mike H ook er co li ided , sending both to th e ground. McGrath was forced to lose a little of his 20-second plus lead but still remained first. McGrath took hi s founh mot a win of th e day beating Mitch ell , Murrey, Levey a nd Hawkin s. McGrath took the overa ll, a 32 score earned Mit ch ell second , a nd Murrey fini sh ed th ird wit h a 5-3 tall y. Kawa saki -m ourned Dan Be rg holesh ot Frankie Brundage, Cra ig Da vi s, Mike Ki ed ro ws ki , an d Mich ael Craig in the first 250cc Pro mota. Crai g wasted no time bettering his position as' he passed Kiedro wski and Davis to tak e third. Befor e th e completion of lap o ne, Brundage emerged th e hew leader after both he a nd Craig passed Berg. Kiedrowski picked up hi s pace a nd moved to thi rd after passing Davis, who then ra n into some problem s a nd dropped to sevent h. Up front Kiedro wski now had the lead over Craig a nd Brunda ge. As th e race progressed Brunda ge slow ly dropped off the pace and allo wed th e lead ers to sli p o ut of . sigh t. The battle for first inten sified as Craig began to app ly pressure to Kiedroski , wh o pi cked up hi s pace but cou ld n 't seem to pull away from the hard cha rging Crai ~. A few yards from the fi nis h Craig m ad e an attempt to pa ss but Kiedrowski blocked the attempt and took the win. Bru ndage was third a hea d of Ro n Turner. Ro und two saw Brundag e blast ou t of th e gate ah ead of Terry Fowler, Kiedrowski, Craig a nd Turner. Both Kiedrowski and Craig picked off ower a nd began c osmg on Bru ndage. O n the t h ird lap Kiedrowski almost cras hed wh en he swapped in the whoops and almost took o ut Craig. He quick ly regained cont ro l th ough and pass ed Brundage as did Craig. Nearing th e halfway point of the race Fowl er went down hard aft er loosin g -h is from wh eel over a small double-jump a nd was o ut of the race, mo vin g Davis into founh a head of T urne r. Within a few laps from th e finish Turner passed Davis a nd too k co mma nd of the founh p lace position. On ce aga in Crai g chased down Kiedrowski to th e checkers wh ere they fini shed over Brundage, T urner and Davis. , David Rh od es tra veled all th e way fro m Ashton, Wash ingt on to cla im th e Four-Stroke Open P ro win. H onda-mount ed Sco t Clifton grabbed the early lead over Doug Schweizer, Rhodes, Rab en Barnum a nd Cliff Tolley in th e first mota . On the seco nd lap Sch weizer found himself laying on th e gro und after cras hing hard, ha nding seco nd to R hodes. Shonly afte r in heri tin g seco nd, Rh odes pa ssed Clifton and took com ma nd of the lead. O n la p four Schweizer moved to second, Barnum was third a n d C lifton dropped to founh . Rhodes took an easy win over Schweizer, Barnum, Cli fton a nd T o lley. The second moto saw Toll ey hol esh ot onl y to drop to fifth , handin g Clif ton th e lead o ver Rhodes, Schweizer a nd Barnum. Clifton and Rhodes began to pull a way fro m . th e pack with Rh od es ga in ing o n Clifton but unabl e to mak e a pass. Clifton took a slim win over Rh od es, Schw eizer, Barnum and Tolley.
