I haven 't had th at problem this year." The tuner _ " I' ve been in m o tor cycle racing for a long tim e, about 24 years, " Dr. John said. "1 was practicing dentistry for abou t lO years and 1 was having a hard tim e being couped up in an office all da y, alt ho ugh 1 liked the dentistry par t. 1 wanted to do so me thing beside my normal mo torcycle proj ects and my ow n ama teur racing.-So I started to cut back my tim e in dentistry; 1 wanted to ge t into r a cin g o n 'a co m pe ti tive, full championship-s eason basi s." And he wanted to do so on o nly o ne brand. Moto Guzzi. "I just loved Moto Guzzis. I' d worked on th em in a nu mber of shops earlier in my career. I wrote up a proposal to a distribut or in Baltimore, and th ey like the proposal. I didn 't ask th em for a whole lot, and I funded almost th e whole thing out of my pocket. Dr. J ohn's next fea t came again in endurance racing in 1985. That time it wa s the ov er a ll championship. "That next year Moto Guzzi an tied up q uite a bit more. They ga ve us th e motorcycle, parts and th e Moto G uzzi Owners Club became thrill ed abo ut having their brand of motorcycle visible on th e trac k again. So all of these touring riders and sport riders in the club started sending us money. That was real good because I was already running out; a t this point I was wor king, maybe, two days a week. We p ut toge ther a professional effort and , once again , the Moto Guzzi never brok e and we won the overall AMA End urance Cham pio ns hip. "The Guzzi fans reall y went crazy over tha t o ne, seeing a twi n-cy linder 950 besting th e 1000cc Intercep tor s and 1100cc Yama has. We did a lo t of wor k on the mo torcycle a nd go t a fai r amou nt of horsepo wer out of it - the endurance bike was th e on ly p iece we ever had o n the dyno and th at ma de about 100 horsepo wer. It would run three, six-hour races and all the practices back -to-back - we started to think of it as a ki tche n a p p liance . It - was so stron g a n d durable, pumping a lot of horsep o wer and not losing any reliabili ty. Against that era of Japanese eq uipment, th e lap tim es were reall y th ere and we were winning races." 1st DARREN CARTWRIGHT 2nd PAUL KRAUSE 3rd GRANT PALENSKE (Yamaha) (Kawasaki) (Honda) The top three riders in the high speed, 170 mile Barstow to Vegas Hare & Hound rely on SPECTRO OILS to protect - their motorcycles.
