It j ust hit me that this is the ~ 25th birthday of the grand old paper known as Cycle News. !=: I was there in the beginning six local papers to try a nd pub lish motorcycle news o n a weekly basis. Dismayed, I wa tched it, too , struggl e and fail , mi ssing issues, lurching along, almost stopping dead like the others . I worked on a month ly motorcycle magazine at the ti me, but I needed that weekl y dose of news and results to keep going. Fortunately , my boss at the magazine a nd I had professiona l di ffer- ~ C :s ~ as a reader of a four-page, 10 cent tabloid named Motorcycle Journal. " Cycle Urinal ," as the wags called it , was the la test in a line of at least ences C!f. 0l?in ion and he said, giving . me sp lend id advice, " If that's the way yo u feel, ge t your own maga zine!" I' ll always be grateful to J oe Parkhurst for firing me fro m th e best jo b I ever had. Because by coi ncidence, th e owner of the weekly paper gave up the business th a t very September , 1965. H e sa id he'd sell me th e name and mai ling list (which is all th e property consisted of) for $3000. T hat was th e scar iest decision of my life. The na me was worthless; it wo uld ha ve to be cha nged quickly. T he list was abo ut 2500 na mes and addresses of people who newspapers were owed to. There were some art files a nd two tale nted young staff wri ters who hadn 't seen a pa ych eck la tely. That 's all. I di dn 't have $3000 either. Each week I prayed, " J ust let me pu t out one more issue on ti me." And so it has go ne for nea rl y a quarter of a cent ury. A lot of hair has falle n on my ' typewrite r and a lot of good people a nswered that 'pra yer, angel W all; for sure. Cycle News is a crusad ing newspaper. A tabloid , we sensa tionalize " our st ories , wh ether i t is anti! di scri mina tion against motorcyclists) or shaking and sha ping u p our own institu tio ns and behavior. We have tak en o n noise. the Sierra CIub, the AMA, mass media, Congress an d govern me nt bureaucracies by th e swarm. Motorcycli sts had never won , a ba ttl e with th ose forces in all of hi stor y until Cycl e N ew s ca me on the' scene. In time, thi ngs got better. )) . So much was ha ppening so fast' in th e 1970s tha t Cycle News had tb ' publish four separa te regional edi!l tions a t once to keep up wi th the' news. P ro vin cia l a tti tudes towardl mo torcyclin g at that time meant thail th e West , East, Dixi e a nd Central regions of the U.S . were li ke foreign co untries to each other.
