And that's exactly what U ltracr oss crea tor -I Mic hael Bryan t ho p es will happen. Stephen J. Can nell Produc- tions, in association with Nelvana Productions, will produce the program, which will air in first-run syndication. The half-hour program will be shown on Saturday a nd Sunday mornings with the premiere showing lasting 90 minutes. Also, a major toy line ba sed on the series will be marketed. Bryant, 1978 a nd '80 AMAIDistrict 7 250cc P ro Motocross East Coast Champion, came up with the idea for a ch ildre n's series as a way to attract new rid ers and fan s to the sport. After a kn ee injury forced him to retire from racing, Bryant came from the East Coast to Hollywood, California, in 1983 where he first worked in the mail room at the MGM studi os. Motocross was still on Bryant's mi nd, and as an aspiring filmmaker his goal was to put the . sport in th e spo tl igh t. "The first thing 1 wanted to do," said Bryant, " was to come up with a project to make people aware of. motocross and sh ow the wa y it is. 1 got tir ed of peop le not understanding how it reall y is. They just think that yo u get on a bike a nd ride. They don 't realize a ll o f th e conditioning a n d preparati on. that go es into racing." From the mail room at MGM, Bryant moved up to a position on the late-night talk sho w Thicke of th e N ight. During negotiations to get a spo t for Bailey on th e show, Bryant learned tha t Wrangler, then the major sponsor of the Supercross Seri es, was pulling out of motocross beca use the cornpany felt th at the sport wasn 't attracting new ri ders and fans . This news really got the ball rolling for Bryant. "Wrangler pulling out inspired th e cartoon idea ," said Bryant. " I wanted to do something that wo uld have a long-range effect, and a cartoon seemed the way to go." . Children , he felt, were the way to go.
