On November 28 I pa rt icipated in my first Barstow-toVegas desert race. Living in Distri ct 36 (nort hern California), and racing on ly locall y, I had no idea what to' expect in a desert race. O wn e r of Al Muth H ar le yDa vidson in Black River Fall s, Wisconsin, since 1965, he had made man y cont ributio ns to th e m ot o rcycle industry and to hi s co m mun ity. Al was a centra l figu re in orga n izing th e Natio na l H arl e y-D a vid son Dealer All ia nce and a stro ng supporter of d irt tra ck raci ng. My asso cia tio n wit h Al came from the la tter. Mle kicks off "Discover Today's Motorcycling" PRcampaign LONG BEACH, CA, DEC. 9 A $400,000 public rela tions campaign designed to " stimulate greater interest, involvement a nd understanding of motorcycling among th e general public" was launch ed today during a Mo to rcycl e Indu stry Cou nci l (MIC) press co n ference in Lo ng Beach . . The theme for the new m ultimedia campaign is " Disco ver T o day 's Mo torcycl ing," and th e program is intended to "deliver a unified message to the publi c that motorcycli ng toda y is a fun , exci ting sport they should con sider exp loring." T he campaign wi ll be aimed at no nmotorcycle industry consumer media through special promot ions. During th e first year, the campaign w ill foc us o n women in motorcycling. Wom en will be highlighted because they , " have a powerfu l influen ce o ve r w ho does/ doesn 't ride. They're more tha n half th e pop ulation and (ha lf) the wor kfo rce . They h a ve a n increasin g impact on husband purch ase decisio ns. As .mo thers, th ey influence children , a nd as wi ves a nd girlfriends th ey inn uen ce use of social tim e." T he cam pa ign will include several maj or eleme nts : e News bureau - An ongoing source of informati on a bou t women in motorcycling. e Editors seminar - a select gro up of fema le editors from the general consumer media will be briefed on women in mo torcycling and will participate in a hands-on riding expe rience program. • e Advert ising - A print ca mpaign will appea r in both th e motorcycle press and the gen eral media. e Pro mo tional materi al s - a variety of promotional materi al s featuring th e " Discover T oday's Motorcycling" logo will be available to the in dustry for advert ising, promotion a nd re tail ap p licatio ns. e O p inion researc h - A trac king stu dy will measure -the program 's impact. T he. cen terp iece of th e 1988 campaign will be th e Van Buren TransCo n, a tra nscontinen tal chari ty ride across the Un ited Stat es by selected wo men rid ers to raise fu nds for the J uven ile Diabetes Associa tio n. It will be held to co mrhernora te the 1916 effort of the Va n Buren sisters, who were th e first women to rid e solo from coast to coas t. T he TransCo n is schedu led for early spring. The " Discover T oday's Mo tor cycling " p roj ec t, w h ich will be handl ed by the Los Angeles, California, public rel a tions firm of Dorem u s P r oter N o velli , was approved by a special MIC comm ittee which grew out of a n industrywide co nference held last year. .T h e initial funding of $400,000 ca me fro m the four major Japanese m o torcycl e m a n u fa ct u rer s H o n da , Kawasaki , Suzuki a nd Yamaha - and although HarleyDavidso n did not contrib ute fu nds , the Am er ican motorcycl e maker reportedl y is, " very su p portive" of th e program. •
