County Raceway. Haslam does it again in Macau GP By Chris Carter Photos by George Hermann MACAU, IND O N ESIA, DEC 7 Typhoon Nina p layed havoc with the Macau G rand Prix, bu t it coul dn' t stop England's Ron H asl am from taking h is sixth overall victory in the Far East Classic. Practice went untroub led by weather, but within an hour of the - second timed practice session on Friday, the rain and wind arrived giving the car racers plenty to worry about and the organizers, nightmares. . Racin g, with sp ecial approval from the governmen t, ran over to Monday and even then it was touch and go if conditions, would be good enough for the motorcycles to race . However, with the race cut to just 10 lap s, and shrugging a track that was littered wi th debris, and still damp in pa tches . For once, Haslam had not been fastes t in practice. T heElf 4 suffered serious internal problems early in Friday 's firs t session, and the 31-yearold GP star slipped to third fastest behind the full -factory Yamahas of Hiroyuki Kawasaki and Norihiko Fujiwara. Completing the front row of the grid was Macau newcomer Andy "McG laddery on the Suzuki 1100 and Britain 's rising young privateer Ray Swann. . Five Americans, John Ashmead, a Transatlantic Challenge teamster, Larry Shorts, Rick Shaw, Scott Cantrell, Doug Chancey and Canadian Art R o b bi n s a dded another flavor to ' th e growing international appeal of this en d-ofthe-year affair ru n through the stree ts. It was sti ll gusting bad ly, though dry, when the race lined up a t 2:00 p .m. on Monday. But already unlucky Shorts was out. The American 's engine lost its water after an O-ring failed, leaving him stranded on the line after the sighting lap. Bo th Kawasaki an d Fujiwara were la te ou t on the grid afte r the sighting lap, fue ling r umors tha t they were unhappy with the conditions and reIuctant to race. In fact they were changing jets, after the temperature had dropped from around 24 degree centigrade to littl e more than five or six. From the start Haslam made his famous superb getaway, with the young Fuj iwara determined not to be shaken off. West Germa n Peter R uba tto was third, pushed hard by Andy McG laddery and Swann, Kenny Irons, Pete r Linden and Trevor Nation. Haslam quickened the pace on lap two , but Fu jiwara stayed with him. Pe ter Linden passed both Irons and Swann to go to fift h, bu t Kawasaki was on the move too after a cautious opening lap. H e was up to eighth. On lap three, though , the trick Macau circui t caught out the you ng Japanese champion. Trying hard to... stay with Haslam, Fuj iwara overbraked at the Melco Hairpin and slid off. That left H aslam on his own, wi th R uba tto a good, lonely second, and McG laddery third. Iro ns was up to fourth, but breathing hard down hi s nec k was L in den , Ka wasaki an Swann. Next to go, on lap four, was McGladdery. The British privateer h it the brakes too hard on a damp patch, and went down hard. He escaped with a sore shoulder, but his' bi ke hi t 'the concrete wa ll, ripping the fro nt end completely off the bike. His cras h lifted Irons to third, bu t Kawasaki was up to fourth, brea thing fire, and hot on their heels were Linden and Swann. Kawasaki was up to th ird by lap five, bu t could not get near Haslam or Rubatto". Ashmead. meanwhi le, was trying hard to lilt himself into the top 10. Linden beat Irons to the flag with Swann right behind. Haslam fin ished 13 second up on Rubatto, who was more tha n 14 seconds up on Kawasaki. . Haslam got a shock when he pulled a celebration whee lie after the flag and the righ t-hand clip-on came off in his hand. Ashmead was the best of the Americans, finishing I Ith o " It 's certainly no t boring," Ashmead said of th e wall-lined circuit. Miami po liceman Rick Shaw was 13th , undismayed by a brush with the wa ll in practice that dis lodged straw bales. The 39-year-old Vietnam vet ad mi tted that the trac k was quite a challe nge, but cla imed it was easy to learn, and fun to ri de. Shaw al so had a panic ai the line, having to replace a rear chain momen ts before the start. Results t . Ron Haslam (Elf); 2. Peter Rubano (Suz); 3. Hiroyuki Kawasa ki (Yam).
