This year's champ in 750cc Superike and Formula One is Zlock acing's Keith Pinkstaff. Pinkstaff ttled for th ird place in both of those ces today behind Trinder and Dick, ho finished first on the Allied onda VFR750. Roeseler tops 'Carson Valley Qualifier By Ken Mirell MINDEN, NV, OCT. 18 After 130 miles, two terrain tests and a genuine grass tra.ck, Larry Roeseler edged out Dave Bertram by 19 seconds to take the overall win at the Carson Valley Qualifier. Over 440 riders entered this one day reliability trials-type event, hosted by the High Sierra M.e. The race started and finished at the Carson Valley Inn and Casino, which co-sponsored this event with MaJcolm Smith Racing Products. Starting at 7;00 a.m. with high desert temperatures in the mid-30s, almost half the bikes did not start during the allotted 60 seconds. Two rough 55-mile loops and a different speed schedule for the As, Bs and Cs had most riders hitting the checks early. Starting at about 6000 ft. elevation, a sin~le track trail kading. into IllinOiS Canyon was littered with washouts and loose rocks. The riders had to stay on their toes and hussle through this narrow canyon. After four miles of dodging rocks, the course ,jumped into the much larger El Dorado Canyon and more rocks. It was here that the riders had a look at the first terrain test. Dust was a problem on the first loop for some riders, including Kevin Hines. He dropped out to save his bike and body for the National enduro. Roeseler powered his factory Kawasaki to the quickest time in the first terrain test with a score of 711 seconds. Bertram was three econds back on his Husky Auto, followed by John Haaker with 744 secolJ.ds. The B class leader through this section was Bruce Rust with 820 second , followed by Dan Sell with 823. In the C class, Sam Soracco led the way with 836 seconds. Roeseler again smoked everybody through the second terrain test with a score of 414. Team Suzuki's Charlie Halcomb and Bertram followed with 426 and 434 seconds, respectively. Dan Sell po ted the fastest time of 503 seconds to top the B class. With a very fast time of 488 seconds, Sam Sora co blitzed the C class. After the second terrain test, the course led back to the Carson Valley Inn, where the grass track was set. The challenging course was laid out, by ISDE veteran and .HSMC member Duke Lamber on 30 acres of green pasture field. The first race of the day saw Roeseler, Bertram, Haaker, Jeff Irwin, Duke Dowell and eventual Senior class winner Frank Showers Jr. square of£. Haaker's four-stroke got the holeshot with Roeseler and Bertram in tow. Roeseler slipped by Haaker after he went wide in a tum. Bertram then passed Haaker and started to pressure Roe eler. Dowell and Irwin were dueling for fourth with Dowell getting the position . Meanwhile up front, Roeseler overhot a turn and Bertram grabbed the lead for good. Just before the finish, Bertram led everyone >astray after blasting through the ribbon. The position were then scrambled and at the finisb it was Bertram, Irwin, Roeseler, Dowell and Haaker. The fastest time of the grass track all day was posted by Eric McKenna, followed by Jimmy Lewis with times of 656 and 660, respectively. In the B class, Mace Coleman posted 640 seconds on a shortened course. Raymond Harold smoked through with a score of 612 to top the Cs. First overall honors of the day went to Roeseler, with a total score of 1811. Bertram and Holcomb followed with scores 1830 and 1865. Topping the B class was Dan Sell with a total of 1992. Leading the C class with a score of 1994 seconds, Joe Bruce won't be riding there long. With District 36 points given to enduro and cross country, the competition was tough.
