SPA Conlume, Audit Division Member- Daytona tech Observ ing t he .tec h n ica l procedures-tteardown) of the Super Sports en try of C ycl e R iders o f Orlando, Florida (a t Daytona ) on Oc to ber 25, I witnessed a complete lack of technica l know ledge on the part of AMA/CCS. A protest was filed to chec k all "Intemal engine parts" and a lo usy $50 was a ll that was requ ired to expose th e motor to their (Cycle R iders) co m petitio n. As 1 understand the rule book, a protest is for one item to be checked a t $50 per . item, i.e. check the bore and stroke - $50, check the head - $50, etc. T he rule book a lso states that on ly the tech inspector, and rider and mechanic of th e protested bike 'will be ab le to observe the teardown . This was not · done! After all was said and done, the motor was sent to a third party because AMA/CCS off icia ls cou ld not determine if the motor was lega l or not. In my opinion there is so me thing lacking in th e way a protested entry is inspected. T here is a lot o f ha rd work, time in R&D. a nd money spent on the motorcycles th at com pe te in the AMA series and to hav e what happened occur is not good for th e sport or th e good name o f th e AMA . DICK GREENWAY J ackson, MI The blame lies with I ha ve read with interest the letters in Cycle News over the last severa l weeks regardi ng the ISDE cheating incident. I will admit that at first I too was shocked and o utraged that our team had tried to pull such a deception, However, after reading Mr. Claypoole's letter I now believe tha t the blame lies not with the riders , b ut with -the AMA and 'the FIM . Mr. Claypoole's philosophy of "do anythi ng necessary to win " must be wh o leheartedly 'end o rsed by th e AMA. If it were not, then the AMA would choose a team ma nager who , believed in p lay ing by the written rul es. The FIM a lso - by not pena lizi ng th e U.S. team - has sent a clear signal to all countries that they too find no fau lt with ch eating in international competition. Ins tead o f venting o ur dissatisfa ction wi th the Six Days system and Alan Ra nd t, we should ins tead wr ite . the AMA a nd let them know tha t we disagree wi th their endorsement of cheating by our Six Day team . If the AMA trul y represents motorcyclists as they claim and if they bel ieve the majority of us disapprove of cheating, th en they should take steps to i ns u re tha i o ur team competes within the ru les. . " The FIM, however, is a different problem . To deal wi th them we must rel y on the AMA to endorse a strong no chea ting ideal and then lob b y the . FIM for their support. I feel that if th e FIM was forced to dea l o ut stiff penalties for cheating then eventu a lly the problem would tak e care of itself. For example: A ru le viola tion to th e extent of which the U.S . team got ca ugh t at this year should result in excl usio n of th e entire team fro m th e next vera's competition . H arsh ? You bet, b u t if this were done uniform ly and consistently then the cheating problem wou ld most li kely not be a 'p ro blem anymore. Mayb e I am a dreamer, but wri te I h ~ AMA anyway. It is worth a try. P ET ER REYN O L DS Wi ndsor, CO Those of you who agree with Mr . R eynolds that it's not whether you win or lose bu t how ' you p lay the game that counts, should ex press that opinion to Mr. Ed Youngb lood, AMA, P.O , Box 6114, Westerville, OH 43081-611 4, Send a copy of your letter to Mr. Hugh Fleming, director of amateur 'activities, at the same address . . . Editor. Helping hands My son a nd I wish to thank Steve Medin for helping p ut my son 's motorcycle back together after an accid ent in a practice session at a Trans-Cal MX race. The bike was all but tota lly demolished when a 500 landed o n the middle of it. My son, Ray , got out of the way just in time. If it had not been for Mr. Medin a nd Pat Lutiz, who provided parts off a bike he had, we would no t have raced that day . We a lso wish to thank John Lampson for changing a tire for us. . My hu sband works a . lot o f Su ndays and is not a lways ab le to be at th e races, so it's really nice to kn ow there are such help ful and friendly people at the track.
