R iding on p ub lic lands, whether i t' s for com pe lilian or j ust trail riding, th e U.S. Fo rest Service requires a ll off-road motorcycles to have spark arresters, and th e U.S. Forest Service rangers are serio us a bo ut it. The reason many riders risk rid ing withou t spa rk arres ters is th at sp ark arresters usuall y hinder th e motorcycle 's engine performance by disrupting exha us t flow through th e si lencer. But Ken Boyko of Corbra Engineerin g Corporati on has develo ped a spark arres ter, ca lled the Sparky, tha t he says is designed not to cu t down th e mo torcycle's perfor, ma nce, but still ca rries th e U.S. , Forestry stam p of approval. The Sparky is simple to mou nt by bo ltin g the m to th e end of th e motorcycl e's stock si lencer. The -lh:Sparky itself is mad e u p of two f pi eces, a n al umin um she ll and th e inner module, wh ich incorpora tes a spark arrester screen. We found th e Spa rky in cred iabl y sim p le to use, a nd no rejetring was r , needed. Sin ce the Sparky doesn't - ac tually block ex ha us t flow . we felt I no horsep ower loss when using th e Sparky. We mounted a Spa rky o n a 1987 Suzuki R M I25 a nd used it in l ) t hree ISDE Qu alifi er s w i th n o p roblems . There is one thing th at you must watch ou t for whe n using th e Sparky a nd th at's car bo n bu ilding u p and p lu gging the spark a rreste r screen . Boyco sugges ts cleaning the screen with Acitone after every 10 or so . ho urs worth of ri d ing. This ca n dep end on the motorcycle' s jetting.
