West Germany. have announced that two-thirds of the exhibition space for the 1 988 show has already been booked. Postfach 210760. 05000 Koln 21. West Germany. According to Laguna Seca's Lee Moselle, the lengthening of the Monterey, California, road race course has begun. The track will be extended to the FIM-required 2.2 miles for the April 10 U.S. GP by building a V -turn to the left where turn two is now located and then another Ll-turn to the right to take the new track back to the existing course in the area of turns three and four. In addition to lengthening the track, other improvements including grading' for additional parking will take place prior to next spring's GP. . 2 The AMA-chartered Tumbleweeds Motorcycle Club of Brockton. Massachusetts. hosted a fund raiser that generated over $3000 to assist the Association's efforts to overturn the ban on motorcycle traffic through the city's parks. "Wheels for , Fields. "the AMA-sanctioned poker run sponsored by the Tumbleweeds. took place on October 12. More than 200 riders braved the cold. rain soaked event. donating money through entry fees. Tshirt sales and raffle tickets. Money collected from this event will be used to defray the legal expenses incurred by the AMA while fighting the discriminatory bike ban. The ban was imposed on July 1. after the Brockton (a suburb of Boston) Park Commission. headed by Chairman Cornelius Spillane. decided that bikes posed a safety hazard in the parks. When asked to justify the ban. Spillane said. "No one ever seid life is fair." Letters and telephone calls to Brockton Mayor Carl Pitaro have gone unanswered. With no other alternatives left. the issue has now gone to court. The AMA had sought a preliminary injunction in the Plymouth Superior Court to overturn the ban. However. on October 15. Judge Elbert Tuttle denied the AMA's request. David Asack. the attorney representing the AMA and all New England motorcyclists in this case. argued that the ban violates the constitutional guarantees of due process and equal protection by banning motorcycles but still allowing automobile traffic in the parks. A trial date of November . 30 has now been set to hear arguments for the ban's dismissal. The Bureau of Land Management will fine AMA/District 37 $1800 for unauthorized grading of a portion of the Barstow-to-Vegas ,race course which passes through the East Mojave Scenic Area. according to BLM State Director Ed Hastey. District 37 also will be required to repair the grading after the race is held. The unauthorized excavation took place earlier this month on a 10-foot wide. 5.5 mile-long portion of the course about four miles southeast of Baker. California. between Kelbaker Road and Interstate 15. While the 1987 event is not in danger of cancellation. the unauthorized action prompted the BLM to cease consideration of a five-year permit for the annual desert classic - permits for the race will now be considered on a year-to-year basis only. Also. The BLM will require that routes for future B-to-V races not pass through the East Mojave Scenic Area. Tsubaki Chain has again been named the official chain for the upcoming Barstow to Vegas Hare & Hound race and the Barstow to Vegas Dual Sport Poker Ride. Team Hyper-Cycle (Suz) won the final round of the AMAiMotoWorld Endurance Series at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 25. The Hyper-Cycle entry' beat High Tech Racing (Suz) and Bougas Racing (Suz) in the 250-mile race; the GTV class at Daytona was won by Second City Racing. Donald Jacks. Mark Chin. Dale Quarterley. Brad Lowe. Greg Tysor and Jimmy Adamo came away from the AMA/CCS Sprint Finals at Daytona International Speedway with class wins. Jacks (Hon) topped the Middleweight Superbike and Supersport classes. Chin (Yam) won the Heavyweight Superbike class. Quarterley (Suz) took the Unlimited Superbike and Supertwins (Bim). Lowe (Yam) won the lightweight Superbike. Tysor (Suz) the Heavyweight Supersport. and Adamo (Duc) topped the Formula Two class. Kevin Schwantz (Suz) won both the Superbike and 500cc classes during the Fuji Sprint road races in Fuji, Japan, on October 25. Schwantz topped Australians Kevin Dowson (Yam) and Kevin Magee (Yam) in the fog-shortened Superb ike race. Schwantz then rode a Suzuki 500cc V-four to the 500cc win in a race that was also shortened to one heat instead of two because of the conditions; Randy Mamola (Yam) finished II th in the 500cc class. American John Kocinski (Yam) finished second in the 250cc class. Two-time World Champion Eddie Lawson has re-signed with Marlboro Yamaha for the 1988 season. Lawson finished third in the 1987 500cc World Championship Road Race Series. winning five races on the Yamaha YZR500. The Upland. California. resident has been with the Giacomo Agostini-owned team since his first year of Grand Prix racing in 1983. Marlboro Yamaha crew chief Kel Carruthers missed the final Grand Prix of the season in Argentina due to the death of his mother, Lil Carruthers, in Australia on October 2, two days prior to the GP. Entries for the Barstow-to-Vegas desert race. which will be held Thanksgiving weekend in the California/Nevada desert. are neither sellable nor transferrable. according to the AMA/District 37 B-to-V Committee. Each entry must be used by the rider who purchases it and each of the 1200 riders in the event will be required to show their driver's licenses the day of the event before they will be issued riding numbers. Entries are still open for the two-day, Barstow-to-Vegas dual-purpose sport ride, which will be held in conjunction with this year's desert race. Participants will ride from .Sunland, California, to Barstow, California, on Friday, November 27, then from Barstow to Las Vegas, Nevada, the following day. ATV injuries have dropped for the third consecutive year. according to statistics compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and recently released by the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America. CPSC statistics show that estimated ATV-related injuries have declined by 12 percent for the first six months of 1987 when compared to the same period in 1986. Factoring in the increased numbers of ATVs in use (which are not reflected in the CPSC numbers) the injury rate for the first half of 1987 actually has declined by 22 percent. when compared to the first six months of last year. according' to the SVIA. A story in the October issue of Baldy Eagle, a newsletter printed by the southern California chapter of the Sierra Club, bragged that the environmental group has successfully, "redirected California's Off Highway Vehicle Program.. .in a new form that is much more responsible environmentally." The reference was to a bill recently signed by California Governor George Deukmejian which reauthorizes the state's OHV program, but places the program in danger of being taken over by environmentalists. The legislation alters the composition of the California OHV Commission to include biological scientists, soil scientists and environmental organizations. The new law also requires that at least 33 percent of gas tax monies that go to the OHV program be spent on conservation and enforcement. Dan Smith (Hus) won the Rabbit Creek Hare & Hound in Murphy. Idaho. October 25. to wrap up his second consecutive AMA National Hare & Hound Series Championship. Pa~1 Krause (Hon) finished second and Garth Sweetland (Hus) took third, Jeff Miller (Hon) collected first 125cc Expert. sixth overall. and Ron Wehr (Hon) claimed first 250cc ' Ex pe rt. seventh overall. Scott Morris (Hus) wrapped up the title in the 250cc Expert ' class and Miller sewed up the championship in the 125c:c Expertdivision. , Deerfield , Speedway in Deerfield, Ohio, is , inviting all riders to a meeting at ,2 p.m. on November 8 at the speedway, the outcome of which will determine whether or not the facility will hold races through the winter season. Marcel Fortney has joined Pirelli Tire Corporatio'n as sales manager-motorcycle tires. Fortney's responsibilities will include all ~spects of motorcycle tire sales as well as coordinating advertising and promotional activities in the U.S. Prior to joining Pirelli. Fortney served as western advertising manager for Cycle Guide magazine. Previously. he was managing director for Yoshimura R&D of America. "Nobody at Bombardier cared about the Can-Am motorcycles except for Jeff Smith and myself," said former hare scrambles National Champion and factory Can-Am ,rider Johnny Martin, regarding the unexpected production halt of Can-Am motorcycles. "Smith was the mastermind of the whole operation, and without him Can-Am wouldn't have lasted as long as it did." Smith was associated with Can-Am for approximately 14 years. According to Martin, Bombardier started producing Can-Am motorcycles in 1972 to give Bombardier's snowmobile (Bombardier's primary product) dealers "something to do" during the summer, the off season for snowmobiling. "It just never really worked out, motorcycle sales 'were slow, especially after the Can-Am Val Court warehouse (Quebec, Canada) closed in 1982," said Martin. Smith is still with Bombardier but is now the operations manager at Bombardier's snowmobile offices in Wausau, Wisconson. Martin is now riding and working for ATK as sales and rechnical coordinator, based in Orange, California. Martin plans on racing selective National Championship hare scrambles and enduro events. Martin is also in the process of purchasing Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minesota.
