II The Hannon brothers, Clive and Bill , took top honors in their respective Intermediate and Senior Intermediate classes at the Plonker III High Desert Observed Trial held at th e Johnson Valley ORV area. This trial featured not only th e Hannon's domination, but also saw the seldom used " ride-off" tie-breaker system. In Senior Intermediate action Clive Hannon took the win by on e clean over Pat Fox . Both rid errs were astride TY350 Yamahas. Cliv e Hannon rode his mag-wheeled Merlin to a convincing win, his first as an intermediat e. Novice riders David Graham, aboard a 1975 Yamaha, and Clyde Butler, riding a TY350, ended the 30 section competition with identical scores and cleans. Both riders made attempts at the more difficult intermediate sectian three times , and the lowest scoring rider for the three tries was declared the winner ' of th e Novi ce class. Current National Champion Bernie Schreiber brought out his new Fantie 303 and three-time National Champion Scott Head, aboard his TR34 Beta, did battle in the Expert class . Schreiber pu t on a real show of aerial maneuvers but they could notstave off the hard-charging Head. Head's tenacious riding took him to the class win, while current ATA Expert class points leader Tom Hamann also edged Schreiber for the second position. Dave Pyle , sponsored by Fantic, took a respectable .Iour th place finish. By 'Merle Acord MORRISON,IL,'Ocr. II Kelly Getz powered a Bike Barn 250 Can-Am through th e final check with a two minute bulge over Jeff Stevenson 's Action Cycle-sponsored 350 KTM for his second overall victory of the Bike Barn/Spectro Oilspo nsored Illinois Cross Country Racing Fall Series. Steve Fiedler , aboard a 430 Husqvarna, led th e B Classesoff the line in th e second wave after a two minute pause and never looked back as he cruised to the B overall win. . Bill Gusse, Bike Barn owner and race promoter, laid out a four mile loop that was fast, hard, slick and dusty but with enough tight wood . trails to give th e run som e technical credence. Getz took command of the fourth round in th e five race series when his red and white Can-Am ca me to life on th e first kick and he holeshot the Expert A cla ss and with th e dust a factor, being first o££ th e line was a big plus toward th e overall win. " I didn 't have any probl ems with the course," said Getz. " O nly at the end when I came through the barrels and the checkers told me one more lap and then wh en I cam e around they told me I had. to ride yet one more lap; I didn 't know if the guys on the barrels were playing games with me or what. " . " I had a so-so start," said seco nd overall Jeff Stevenson, " but I just cou ld n' t get it together the first hour. I was back there somewhere around eigh th or ninth right in th e middle of all that dust, which didn 't help any. On the second hour I began to move up and on the last lap I went around Curt, (Cu rtis Arpp ) for second place. . " I couldn' t get my Husky started until the third kick, " said third overall Arpp, "That put me right in th e middle of Harvey (Whi p ple), Chuck (Ca nnon) , Gary (Peterso n) and Larry (Bergq uist), and we're all pretty well matched so while we're all dicing and bumping, Getz is running away from us. I know he got at least a minute lead on that firs t lap. I can't spot Getz a minute and hope to beat him." J eff Mcintyre won the Lightweight A (0-250) class and just aft er going through the final barrel he seized hi s Can-Am. " I felt it grab a co uple of times and thought about cho king it but th e open stu££ was too .ro ugh to tak e a hand off the bars . So I eased o££ th e throttle a bit and hoped for the best." Glen Fuegen and Ron Whipple finished two-three while Scott Meinsma and Larry Vegter rounded out the top five. . Yamaha rider Larry Sullivan beat out Alan Fitzwater for top honors in the Heavyweight A class with Mike Ellis taking top honors in the Seniors. II Suzuki- Yamah a Lemon Grovespo nsored T om Moen took his KTM to the overall win at the AMA District 38 Hi -Boots Desert Fiasco. Moen was lu cky in his win as arch rival Steve Walker broke on the last lap after leading th e whol e ra ce. Moen 's chances'of winning his third consecutive number o ne Open plate have now been greatl y improved. Rain clouds from a tropical storm greeted th e racers as they lined up for the start. . Getting to check one quickly would be important as the first few miles went directly through the rough Huff mudhills. Passingwould be hard until they reached the flats halfway through the 30-mile co urse. Smoking through check one first was Steve Walker. Moen was right on his tail as th e two lead riders left th e rest of th e field far behind. Third overall and leading the 250s was Mark McPerr y, on ly inches ahead of Mark Van scourt. Honda's Randy "S torm in ' " Norman was present but had gotten a bad start and was running out of the top 10. Points leader in the 125ccclass Bruce Taylor was heading the small bores. Wes Em had his Yamaha close behind waiting for Taylor to make a m istake: Mik e Rhustorfer was leading the Vet class, but a mendin~ broken wrist was expected to slow hIS charge. Bill Lyons, trailing in second, knew this and was eage r to ga in back pr ecious points to retain hi s number ODe pl at e. Bill Ream s was sho wing the Seniors wha t h is big ATK co uld.do as he led h is class. Back ou t front, Walker had opened ou t a 10 second lead as the field hit home check for the first tim e. Moen maintained second unable to keep th e pace set by Walker. Vanscourt had passed McPerry to take the 250cc class lead. T aylor blew hi s engine and turned over the I25cc lead to Enz. Then Em subsequentl y broke a throttle cable leaving a surprised Jeff Martinez running out front. Lyons had moved up tobattle with Rhustorfer for the Vet lead. Lyon's bike had lost its silen cer packing and was running erra tic. He was not backing . off, however, as he soon passed the injured ' Rh usto rfer to tak e command. Norman was now up to ninth overall and on the gas . Heading out on th e third, and last, loop Walker continued to keep Moen at bay. Walker was riding aggressively and a little wild. Moen, in contrast, was almost lazy and casual in his motions. For two laps the gap had rem ained the sam e, through, as Walker lo oked to have the race wrapped up. Then, out in th e high speed sections of the course, the dust cloud in front of Meon had disappeared. A stunned Moen found himself with clear vision and the lead. A dejected "Walker sat on his br oken bike with nothing to do but wait for rescue. At the finish , it was Moen taking th e checkered to the su rprise of the onlookers. Walker .and Moen had been in a tight points battle for the number one Open plate all year. They were tied at the summer break . Since th en , VValker has been the dominate force with Moen su££ering some bad luck. Today's ra ce ha s put Moen back in th e driver's seat. The four remaining races sho u ld lead to one of th e most exciting season finals in D-38 history. Res ults O/A : 1. Tom Moan (KTM); 2. M ark Vanscoun (Han); 3. Mark M cPerry (Yam); 4. Patrick Brown finished second in both classes, while Jonathan Sentell took third in the Pee Wee class and Gene Burdette was third in the Junior Minis. In the Senior Mini class, run with the Enduro class, Steve Burdette got the holeshot and disappeared. Scott Heath was next out of the gate but a fall on the first lap put him next to last. Kevin Hudson found himself directly behind Burdette after Heath's fall, but Tony Burdette and Dan Farrar stuck to him like glue and on th e next-to-last lap Hudson fell on th e anthill. At the finish it was Tony Burdette with th e win while Heath workedihis way back uf to second at the checkers ahead o Lamar Jordan. Alan Hall won the 125cc Novice qualifier over Zane Batton but Hall wasn 't so lucky in the main when
