Sloan Cooper flew to victory in both 250cc Junior motos at Ca rlsbad and wrapped up the class champio ns hip as well. the overa ll ahead of Ri ce, Warch, Smith and " MX-Mo m" Gal e Webb. Mark Alvarez was the earlv lead er in th e first d i vision of 250cc Beg in ners and was bein g closely followed by Kenny Madden, Rich Q u ick, Frank Sch ettini, and Doug Johnson. Quick, not quite content with th ird , worked hi s way into th e lea d a nd began to form a cus hio n on the pa ck. Alvarez was passed once again and now found himself in thi rd. Wh en th e riders came aro u nd on the third la p , Q ui ck held th e lead foll ow ed by Madden , Schet rin i, Gu y Comer, a nd J ohnson. On the fourt h . lapJ im Gardner had worked his wa y up to fifth, d ropping J ohnson to sixth. At th e che ckers it was Quick, Madden , Schettini , Comer , a nd Gardner. Rich Ban low e holeshot th e second mot o followed by Quick , Ronn ie Brown, Madden , and Gar dn er. On th e second lap Banlowe ' drop ped ba ck to seco nd and ga ve Quick th e . lead. At midrace Brown and Madden started to do some heavy battling, when Madden passed Brown and appeared to be pulling a way. Brown , not enj oying h is stay in fourth, passed Madden and began seek ing Banlow. At th e finish Madden made a spectacular pass as he flew by Banlowe off the finish line jump. Quick too k the win ahead of Madden, Banlowe, Alvarez, arid Johnson. Quick won th e series with 305 points, Comer was second with 270, and Madden th ird with 266. At the start of the 60cc 9-1 1 class , Mike Metzger gated perfectly ahead of Cas ey johnson.rxteve Hengeveld, and J eff Willoh. On lap two Metzger and J ohnson began to pull a way from the pack and have a t it. The race for third began to pick up as Will oh passed Hengeveld and tried to pull away. Hengeveld did not like Willoh 's idea and stayed right with him until the end. Metzger took the mo to win ahead of Johnson , Wi lloh and Hengeveld. Seco nd moto ac tio n saw Johnson take the lead followed by th e hardcharging Metzger and P hil Rich mond. Rich mo nd, who was never a factor in the first moto, became a detriment to H engeva ld and Willoh as th ey couldn 't find a wa y b y. Meanwhile Metzger snaked by Johnson but couldn ' t pull away. Johnson was pers istent and wanted to take the overa ll. The two battl ed inten sely with a lot o f bar banging taking pl a ce. On the third la p Willoh passed H engev e ld a n d Ri chm on d a n d se e me d co n te n t wat chin g th e Metzg er/J o hn son batt le. Go i ng through th e last turn Johnson tri ed to div e underneath h Metzger but Metzger sh u t th e door a nd the two coll ided, a lmos t sending them to the gro und. At th e fin ish it was Metzger wi th th e win a head o f J oh nsc.n, _ Willo h , Hen geveld and Ri chm ond.
